Handi .223 load questions
« on: December 02, 2008, 03:47:23 PM »
Please help me, my head is starting to get clouded with numbers

My Handi .223 bull 1:12 twist is not liking anything I load. I've been reloading for over 20 yrs but this time I can't get lucky. Here is what I've found. To seat a 55gr VMAX to touch the lands is 2.442 OAL. My load is 26.0 BLc-2, 55gr VMAX seated to 2.380 OAL. This load will group about .910 @ 100 yards.

I would like to seat to be off the lands .015 - .020 but at 2.380 there is only .177 of bullet in the case.

Varget did not shoot better than 1.75 inches. BLc-2 seems to be better, but 26.0 is a mild load.

Any suggestions on which way to go?

I've read that some shooters have had positive results seating deeper, even though it goes against the grain.  Try other powders as well, W 748, AA2230 are a couple that I've heard good reports on.  Haven't tryed the Ramshot TAC yet but am gonna try that some day too.  Good luck and keep us posted.  Anyone else?  Tim? H&R .223 barrels barrels are long throated, seat to recommended COL and you'll be happier, trying to reach the lands with any bullet that will stabilize in the 1:12" twist is futile. As far as loads, I get ½" groups with the 45gr Win White box ammo, so I've never tried to handload for it, ain't gonna try to fix what ain't broke cuz is shoots so good!!  :D But there are those that have tried to duplicate that load, try the search if they don't fess up!! ;D

I've shared this before:  My Super-lite .223 (which also has a 12" twist) seems to do well with 25 gr. of H4895 and either the 55 gr. Speer, 53 gr. Barnes TSX, or 60 gr. Nosler partition.  If I allow for cooling between shots, the littlest Handi will put three into about an inch (or a bit more) @ 100 yards.  I gather the standard weight .223's do substantially better.
