I have a factory .243 blue barrel that will print the first shot about 3 inches above the group, now this is out of a cold barrel and doesn't matter if it's clean or not, and is very repeatable. Once the barrel is warm it will shoot a decent 1 1/2" group. I have floated the forend by sanding it down on the sides till I have good clearence, I have put in an oversize hinge pin and the action is stiff to close, and I don't think it is a scope or ring and base problem because once the barrel warms up I'm fine. It is that first shot out of a cold barrel that is the problem. I am shooting factory ammo, but I don't think thats it either. Anybody out their experience this, and if so what to do?

Well, it sounds like the first shot is the way you want it to shoot all of the time, since the first shot is what matters anyway. I had a ruger that did the same thing. The first shot was right at three inches high at a 100 yds. and then as the barrel fouled and warmed up the point of impact would start climbing high and to the right. Did you break the barrel in when you first got it? You should be getting better then a 1 1/2 gr. with this gun. This is at a 100 yds. I take it. You can try different bullets to see if this will help also.

rpseven, thanks, and I didn't really break it in and thought about living with it like that but I figured in the heat of the moment I would forget that it hits high or if I adjust it, that after the first shot it would hit low, na I want it right. I think for a factory barrel shooting factory ammo that 1 1/2" aint too bad, not spectacular, but decent. If I can get this first shot in the group I'd be happy.

Is it a cold barrel or a clean barrel, that causes the high flyer? I have found that a clean barrel will cause a flyer more often than a cold barrel.

Thanks for the replies, sorry it took so long to get back, but the computer has been on the fritz. The problem doesn't matter if the barrel is clean or not, the only consistent thing is that the first shot out of a cold barrel will hit high, after that she will group decent. Weird ha.

Try it with out the hinge pin they don't work and just opening up the sides of the forend is "not free-floating the barrel" you need to put some air under the barrel.Put some nylon washers under the forend to free-float the barrel.Just my :money: :bye:

A friend of mine got on here and found where someone took some washers and free floated the forend. So last week we went to the hardware store and bought some tiny washers and free floated his forend. It surprised the heck out of me when we did it. Now he can slide a dollar bill in between the barrel and forend and now his groups have shrunk to a 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch @ 100 yds. I told him that he could probably shrink the groups even more if he got his trigger wieght lowered.

I tried to do that originally with my Encore, but with a washer/s the screws were not long enough and no hardware store in the area had the screws with fine enough threads. So I sanded out everything except where the screws go up through and my Encore groups fantastic.

i just used 3m tape cut to size and placed in two spots in the forearm, near each screw. i had been using folded electrical tape. still use the factory screws too!
on the .243 with a cold barrel flyer, do you oil the barrel before storing? maybe try drying out the barrel before shooting the first group.

I have a forearm that is pillar bedded from Virgin Valley, it sure helped tighen my groups up.

You should be able to sqeeze a bit more accuracy out of that 243 barrel. Mine consistently shoots around 3/4" usually with 3 of 5 nearly touching.
I have installed rubber washers (available in different thicknesses from the plumbing department) but have not tried it yet in my 243. It has seemed to make some difference in my 15" 308 though I haven't gotten down to any serious testing yet.

Try some washers cut out of plastic MILK bottles. Thick enough to work yet thin enough not to need longer forend bolts.
