H&R Ultra Automatic Model 360
« on: January 31, 2008, 10:21:10 AM »
Can anyone give me some insight on this model?  I am thinking of buying a Model 360 in .243.  Gun is like new.  What should this be worth?  About a 1968 vintage I am told.  Thanks snood

A hunting buddy owned one for a couple of years in the the early 1970s. The firearm had reliability problems and he sold it. Failures to feed and jams. A new magazine did not help. S&W was very poor in their support and I imagine no support would exist now. I would pass.

I added a pic in my original post.  I've gotten a lot of responses about this rife.  Easily 5 to 1 on the positive side.  Targshooter, your buddy must have got a lemon.  There is one for sale on Gunbroker for over $600 right now.  Thanks for the replies everyone.

I remember those. They look like Winchester 100's.

yu might talk to your local gunsmith about the gun and see if there is any common probs with that model and if there is ,are they easily fixed. looks like a mighty nice rifle, id hate to pass it up if the price is under market value.

Snood,

I had one of these in 308 Win back in the 80's.  I sold it, and a bunch of other guns, to generate money for college.  It is the only gun that I sold that I wanted back and couldn't get back.  My Dad bought the gun new (it was many years old, but new in the box) in the 70's.  We didn't do a lot of shooting with it (I'd guess that we put 3-4 boxes of ammo through it), but it never failed to repeat.  I believe that we fed it Remington Core-lokt.  I can't give you details on accuracy because I didn't have a lot of time to spend on that stuff then.  However, I can tell you that the groups were acceptable to us at the time and it killed every deer that it was pointed at - some at fairly long range.  My only caution to you would be that buying it, like anything that is no longer in production and has little or no support, could leave you with a non-functional gun at some point.

When I owned the gun I called H&R to ask why it was no longer available (because we had such a good experience with the one we purchased, and it was so much better looking than anything else on the market).  The customer service person said "that gun had some problems so it was discontinued".  At the time I wondered if the problem, like a lot of H&R guns from the 60's, was that it was built to such a high standard that it couldn't compete with Remington's offerings.

One last thought - you may want to check with gunparts corporation (they are on the web) to see if they have any parts for the old girl.  They may also know, due to demand, what, if any, problems the gun had.

Good Luck.

I had a .308 H&R M-360 in the early 80's, and I've never seen a used one actually sell for more than $350, between then and now.

I still have an H&R model 360 Ultra .308 in my gun safe.  It has always been a reliable gun.  Some parts are available from Gun Parts Corp.  This gun is quite complicated with a lot of small parts.
