To Buy or Not to Buy
« on: January 15, 2009, 05:11:39 AM »

Being as how I don't have a surplus of cash ( who does now adays, right?), I am in the process of researching possibilities, and hoarding any extra dinero to by my next gun.  what I can't decide on is what?  My options are as follow:   Handi 223 Synthetic w/ bull barrel and pistol grip, with a 357 mag, 7mm08 and 444 marlin barrel to follow,  or a ruger, remington, or tikka bolt action 7mm or 7mm08.

As of now I have a .22 Mag Marlin Bolt and a 270 win Rem 750 auto.

What I am hung up on is purpose. I would like to have a 223 to fill the gap between 22 mag and 270, and the added barrels for 357 to match my taurus 357, 444 marlin to hog hunt, and 7mm08 for a little extra.  My main purpose for the bolt 7mm mag/ 7mm08 would be hunting bigger game at longer ranges and more inclement weather.  i use the 270 for hogs and deer and coyotes, but if it was bad weather I would not want to take an auto, but rather a bolt or maybe even a single shot.

Any input or advice would be appreciated.

I'd get the .357 and a .45-70 instead of the .444.  You really don't need a 7mm-08 since you have the .270, except for not dragging it out in the rain.  I wish they had made the Handi Magnums, I think I would have gotten both the .300 and the 7mm.  I had the 7mm on order.

Gotta agree with Pete, Take the .357 out to a max, Use some 180-200 gr hardcast lead and hog hunt with it. I cant see a .444 unless you just want one,(which is a good reason. ;D) the .45-70 will do anything a .444 can and then some. I would venture a guess that the .223 .357 .45-70 and .30-30 are the most bought and used Handies made.

Years ago I hunted rabbits and squirrel in Illinois with a Sears( JC Higgins I think) single 12 gauge. We had some freezing rain one day and during the hunt I had several misfires because the water/ice got into the space between the hammer and the firing pin. I got a click( barely) and that was it. The Handi's are subject to the same. I would rather have an auto banger over an exposed hammer gun in those conditions.

id take a handi over a auto any day for bad weather.  its just a matter of degreasing anything that will solidify, and a light lube with a super good oil like break free.  a handi will go bang in any weather, its up to you......as is with any gun.
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

In light of most applicable military weapons  being auto of some sort and expected to work from Desert to the Artic, the auto banger would not work. Why?
