Handi .308, First Kill
« on: November 16, 2008, 12:56:14 PM »
Took the Handi .308 out yesterday. Was very windy, but decided to go out since it had rained most of the night and early morning. Took this 110# doe at exactly 2 pm with the wind blowing like crazy. 150 grain Core-Lokt.
First time I've had a shot with the .308

Way to go greenjeans!
Looks like you'll have some mighty fine eating. I really like the Core-Lokt bullets, I load all my ammo and the Remington bullets are the ones that usually bring home the meat.
How far away was she, did she go very far after the shot?

GOOD SHOOTING!

Looks like the .308 did the job!

I drew first blood Friday morning with my .270 (Picked up the barrel in the classifieds in September) by dropping a nice fat spike buck at 125 yards, using Winchester Power Points in 130 grain.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Slufoot,

She was about 40 yards away and ran about the same distance. I hit her further back than I normally shoot, but she walked behind some trees and I couldn't get right behind the shoulder. Think I got all lung and no heart with the shot I made. Thanks for the comments.

Way to go greenjeans. Another victory for that cheap Handi rifle that won't shoot straight because, as we all know "If you didn't spend $1,000, it won't get the job done!"  ;D  Can't wait to get my new Ultra 308 out there and do it. -g

Those danged old Core Lokts are still killing deer just as dead as they did over sixty years ago.

i did the same thing with my new survivor 308.  got a four point buck close to dark.  lung shot him too cause i was in thick woods and got a little excited.  his doe was walking behind me and i couldnt get turned around fast enough to get a decent shot off at her.  he ran a little ways and we found him an hour later.  i was using hornady 165 gr soft point boat tails i had reloaded for a different rifle.

Yukondog, Didn't get the bullet back, total pass through. Blood trail was easy to follow as she was bleeding both sides about every 10 feet. Gonna take the 25-06 Ultra out this weekend. There was a downside to the day, though. Driving out I ran over something and put a hole in one of the rear tires on my ridgeline. It stayed up long enough to get the spare on, but had to spend $445. for two tires this afternoon so I could replace in pairs. Lucky my wife is understanding. My buddy got a nice one, too. Weighed 95#. Bloodied up the Honda.

Great work and good eats.

It is amazing to see the difference in size of deer in different parts of the country.  Up north here a nice deer would be considered to be 120lbs and up field dressed.  The biggest I have personally shot for a doe was 180 lbs and she was big.  Again, no offense those are nice deer, but like I said, they do get bigger in other areas don't they?  Where do you hunt? I hunt Northern MN and WI.

This post brings a couple of things to mind.  First is I love the .308.  I've killed more deer and varmints with it than any rifle I own.

The second thing was a shot I took two years ago.  I had a large doe come in through brush and I couldn't get a clear shot.  After a couple of minutes, I whistled, she poked her head out of the brush and looked right at me.  I put a 168 gr. Win. between her eyes.

My buddy from Florida shot a 3 point opening morning, the 15th with a custom flint lock he built and it dressed out to 175 lbs.  We're on Michigans Upper Peninsula.  He says, most of the deer they get in Florida are lucky to field dress at 100.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I'm in upper South Carolina and most of the does you see brought in are 75-80 lbs. A 200 lb. buck, on the hoof, would be considered huge down here. The up-side (or downside) is that we have a 5 buck limit, just about every weekend is either sex day with no doe tag req'd., and you can buy 4 extra doe tags for $5. each. There is no such thing as a buck tag. You're on your "honor" that you will only take 5 bucks per year and there is no check in. Season in some parts of SC is from August 15 thru January 1.

Wow!, on your honor....  Kind of like fishing, do you put them on a stringer too...LOL

I have a buddy from Tennessee that comes up to northern WI and hunts with us.  He is amazed at the difference in size of the animals.

Our season starts with archery on September 15th and ends with archery on or just after New Years, with 1-3 weeks of gun season sprinkled in there depending on the area.

I was just trying to attach a photo that I got of an average to large doe up here and I can't figure out how to get it attached.

All I get is img/img when I hit the attach image button.
