Accessory for Cleaning Barrels
« on: November 17, 2008, 02:47:26 PM »
I found that when either doing normal cleaning of my barrels or polishing a barrel to help break it in.  I always seemed to make a mess at the end of the gunvise.   I took a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe 12" long.  Put a cap on one end and then cut four long slots down the sides.  Made one wider than the rest so it would pass by the front sight.  I use a hose clamp around the PVC to secure it to the barrel.   To keep the brushes or cleaning jag from passing all of the way out of the barrel, I can position the PVC just beyond the end of the barrel or off so the brush clears.  This keep all of my mess inside of the PVC. When running 100 strokes thru the barrel I have found this to be very beneficial to me.

You can just slip a pop bottle over the muzzle too, it catches patches as well as foaming bore cleaner or anything else that makes a mess.  ;)

In my isolated pocket of NH we still refer to such as "tonic" bottles. That friend Mitchell is is Metis or half breed Quebecois.

Here in the west we use a rag or old t-shirt thrown on the garage floor.  Catches enough to make it easy to pick up.  My worn out cotton underwear still make the best wipe-down rag.  Cleaning patches are made from flannel remnants purchased in the sewing department at Wal-Mart!  (pronounced Waaahl-maaaart)
