.375 JDJ Handi?
« on: November 19, 2008, 07:31:54 PM »
Like the .45-70, .375 JDJ is one of those rounds I have always wanted to have a gun in. How would you more experienced Handiholic's reccoment doing it?

Remember a .375 JDJ is a proprietary name. I think the only one that has a license to make them is T/C and of course SSK Industries. I do not think that SSK would do a rebore for a Handi barrel. You would have to contact them to find out for sure. Other wise it is a .375-444. I would do a rebore to .375 from some thing smaller. I think a 22" barrel would be sufficient for a 375-444, but that is a matter of personal choice. I think a stubbing project would be a little thin in the side walls of the chamber for a case that big. I am not sure on pressure, a T/C Contender will handle it and the barrel is about .850" at the chamber. A Handi barrel at the chamber is around 1.1". You subtract .25" for side walls of a stub and that leaves you about .850", but you need to take the thread depth out. I think it would be pushing a stubbing project, at least for my taste. My understanding is, it would be around the $300 range + the cost of the donor barrel to do a rebore, maybe a little more. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

An alternative might not be easy to find, get a 2007 38-55 Target and handload it to 375 Win velocities.  ;)

Well, I really wanted to get a .38-55 Target bbl for my BC, but they quit production before I amassed the funds.

Hindsight is always 20-20, but $135 for an accessory barrel would've been a lot less expensive than a $300 rebore or stub.  :-\ Maybe you can still find a second hand barrel, preferably one with a tight bore.  ;)

I can promise you that SSK will NOT rechamber a handi to .375 JDJ. I asked JD personally to do it for a friend of mine who wanted it and he said nope not gonna happen. They will not rechamber a handi period. So you cannot have a .375 JDJ handi.

You might find someone else to do their version of the .375/.444 but it won't be a .375 JDJ and you should NOT use .375 JDJ data for it.
