Three times I have bought used barrels from people to find that two of the three do not fit my frame.And can't be made to fit, I have gone through the FAQ and the stickies it wount work. I don't see the point if I have to buy a new rifle every time I want a new caliber what is the point. For almost the same money I can buy a Stevens 200 and switch brls at will and feel confident that every brl will fit and function properly with the use of a go no go guage. I think I have lost that lovin feelin for NEF or marlin NEF, or remington NEF, whoever owns it now. A little tinkering in the shop is one thing but these are not worth it. At least not for me. I like the two brls. I have that fit my frame. But the rest are tent stakes.

I've done 5 and all but one fit immediately and the one that didn't was fixed in ten minutes, at home with simple hand tools.  I've got to believe you're missing something.  I think you should itemize the problems and see if we here can help.  I'll buy those "tent stake" barrels in a heart beat..........but of course they're just worth scrap metal ;) ;)  Seriously, let us try to help with it.  Pete

What seems to be the problem? Is it the barrel shelf that has been filed too much? What calibers are the ones that don't fit? The shelf on the barrel can be welded up and re fit. It is time consuming though, and you need to know how to Tig weld, or know someone who does.

If you are throwing in the towel on these barrels, let me know, I think I can find a home for them.

What is wrong with the barrels??
Why don't they fit?? Are they loose on the frame??
Do they not latch??
Tell us what's going on and maybe someone can help you.
If you don't want to mess with them, maybe you could sell them on the classifieds.

Well when I mount the brl on the frame there is a gap at the bottom of the brl to the frame, all the way around to the top. The gap is bigger at the top but the chamber does not touch the breech face at any point. One brl is better that the other but not buy much.

Follow the directions for shimming.  This will move the barrel back toward the breech.  Is one of those barrels the 500 you bought from me?

One of the problems with some second hand barrels that I've dealt with is when a previous owner has tried to fit the barrel and not done a good job keeping the pivot or latch shelf true or otherwise messing it up so it won't fit any frame without more work in the form of shimming and/or using epoxy or welding.  :'( Having multiple frames is one key to getting second hand barrels that haven't been modified to work, the more frames you have, the better since H&R barrels and frames aren't one size fits all, having only one frame is a real disadvantage.

Sounds like you need to shim the underlug.
Do you have any feeler gauges to see how much you need to shim??

That's why I asked if one of them was the 500 he got from me.  it came on a brand new rifle and was untouched and/or  unfired by anyone other than H&R.

I've had to shim many second hand barrels that had only been factory fitted originally, but my first choice is to see if it fits one of my frames without any fitting, or very minor flat filing of the chamber face under the right circumstances. But if it's loose on the frame, the only choice is to shim, and having only one frame to try it on isn't the best considering maybe only a third to half of second hand barrels will fit without some work.

FWIW, my .500 barrel wouldn't fit any of the two dozen or more frames I had at the time, it was loose on all of them. :-\

No Kevin it is not the 500 S&W brl.
  It is a 6.5x55 and a 280 rem AI and the gap is big enough to slip in a match book cover in between the frame and the brl. Both were from fleabay before they outlawed the sale of brls.

I just asked about the 500, because I knew it had not been ground on by anyone other than H&R.
I would still look at the instructions for shimming.  I think you will find that they can be made to work.

45north, I had to use a .026" stainless shim in one barrel that someone has cut so big it would have needed a .400" hinge pin, it wasn't just deep, it was way bigger!!  :o

Tim,

Can you post a pic of this barrel??
I have never seen one that had been shimmed and refitted.
I would just like to see how it turned out.

I don't have it any more, it was the 270 Ultracomp that I sold to Canon6, maybe he can take a pic if he still has it. The .500 barrel has a thick shim tho, here's a pic.

No steve I am not interested in selling the brls. at this time. I do have a mid 70's ford pinto that I will let you have cheap. It ran good back in the 80's as is, a real looker. No just kidding I am going to mess with them for a while. Gives me something to do instead of cutting firewood. I wander if they sell steel bed by the quart. I'd rather be shootin them than fixin them.

I've been using SuperMend epoxy lately, it's metalized and has two to almost three times the compressive strength of any comparable epoxy including Devcon, it's also readily available in 2oz and 4oz packaging, see the barrel fitting info.  ;)

I do not have the 270,Quick sold me, my oldest son has it. It will shoot into  1inch all day long with Rem factory(130 grs) if my son does his part.That has to be the thickess shim I have ever seen , but it does work.      Doug

I guess I have been lucky.
All of the barrels I have bought from the various members have fit one or two of my frames except one.
That one is a 25-06 that is loose on all of them.
I don't really care for the caliber so I haven't tried to shim it yet.
I'll get to it after hunting season is over.
