I sent in a shotgun for 2 barrels in late July - had a 4 week turnaround.

Sent in a receiver for 3 barrels August 4th - I'm STILL waiting.

just for you to compare cost/time/shipping, I just went a few weeks ago and picked up an sb1 .44 mag for 219.00

I have never done the barrel program just because id rather have the whole gun for a little more money and no hassle.

I personally dont know what the cost would be on a new .44 barrel, or if its a good idea or bad.

I just thought id give you something to compare it to.

Good luck

Dave

Be aware there is a $15.00 charge each for shipping and handling, testing, proofing and fitting for a total of $60.00 :o added to the cost of each :o :o :o barrel you get.  Web site has been changed to the new prices now for parts and barrels.  Have to think about cost savings vs. time when it comes down to it.  I won't go into what I went through :'(, they are still in the process of making it right after I sent frames off 6-13-08 :-\.  Choice is yours.  DP

My boy has a handi rifle in a .243 and I have to say it is probably the last one I will buy. We sent the reciever in for a muzzleloader barrel and that took a lot longer than the lady at the factory told me it would. My boy wasn't able to hunt with it that year as we didn't get it back until the season was over. The accuracy with his .243 barrel is around 3-4 inches at 100 yards. I know there are things you can do to tighten these groups but I don't think you should have to do this on a new rifle. For about the same money you can buy a savage\stevens and get better accuracy and more than one shot.

"Better accuracy and more than one shot" That's kind of oxymoran in the Handi world. Kurt

I bought a 243 youth for my son last year and the trigger wouldn't reset so I called and they paided for S/H both ways and while they had it I had them do the trigger job and add a 12gauge barrel to it. Turn around was 6 weeks. The trigger is better now and it shoots "minute-of-deer". he has not shot for groups yet but it will hit a 3" swing target at 100 yards. I have thought about sending it in this winter for a muzzle loader but i want to see where his interest is on that one. For myself I'm getting a CVA Optima Elite Combo so I do not have to send it in to get barrels fitted and accuracy is never in question with them. They guarantee their accuracy, check them out.

I thought the .44 Mag Handi was based on the SB2 frame? Did they change that?

Thanks-Jack

H&R offers SB1 357 and 44 mag now, and no, you can't put those chambered barrels on SB1 frames, the factory SB1 rifles have small centerfire rifle type firing pins.

All 44mags made by NEF/H&R1871 have been on SB2 frames until 2008, they dropped the SB2 44mag, and only offer it on an SB1 frame. They also reintroduced the 357mag on an SB1 frame. If you read the note under the rifles (and their combos) you'll see that they won't fit ANY other rifle barrels to those frames.

OK, ya I see now Tim!! I think the .44 use to be on the SB2 frame and also offered in the wood version. That is the one I wanted. I`ll have to look for a used one or maybe get the 30/30 and get a .44 barrel fitted to it if they will still do that?

Thanks-Jack

Yes, 44mag barrels are real popular now since Marlin started making the barrels last year, bores are nice and tight, I even ordered one last fall!!  ;D
