fitting a bbl
« on: November 07, 2008, 02:48:48 PM »
ok i was reading the barrel fitting section. here is the deali received a bbl from a very nice guy one here to use. I have a huntsman frame that i would like to put the shotgun bbl on it fits tight, there is no wobble or anything. my problem is it will not stay shut this is the only mods it needs. i have no gauges or way to check it. so what do i need to do to make it fit correctly and stay shut the latch is not catching. help please i wish some of you home gunsmiths were closer to help me out. when you close the action it seem like the latch is a bit to low to hold it closed

thanks in advance Terry

Terry, read the FAQs first.  Then smoke the latch shelf and see how much enagement is there.  Sounds like little or none. Read the specs.  Then touch the latch shelf on the barrel with a light file.... NOT THE FRAME...until you get proper engagement.  Uncle Quickdtoo will save you.

thanks guys don't see any gap between bbl and breech face so from the sound of it need to take a small amount of metal of the latch shelf. need a feeler gauge but there is no light showing through. also if i hold gun up it falls open. so not engaging at all.

thanks again guys am going to try and do thismyself if this goes ok will maybe try and fit a rifle bbl next time.

off to find a file.

Be careful.  You need to check out what you can do putting a rifle barrel on an SB-1 frame.  Pay attention, it can get ya.  You maybe happy being able to see and walk away.

NO NO
Don't file it until the release lever is all the way up.
Like Pete said, keep checking the latch shelf until you are getting good engagement.
If I fit a barrel I try to get 1/16th inch engagement.
If you file until the release lever is all the way up, as the shelf and latch mate to each other it will probably end up loose on the frame.
The release lever should not be all the way up.
It should have PLAY AT THE TOP WHEN THE BARREL IS LOCKED UP.
Please go slow and be careful, it doesn't take much to go from a good fit to a loose fit.
It's easier than it sounds, just take your time.

Terry, when I mounted my 20 GA tracker II barrel to my 45 colt frame, it locked up perfect. I still went through all the steps in the barrel fitting section. I found it helpful to be able to compare to a factory fitted barrel. I have 4 handi's and I took the feeler guage to each one, smoked the latches on them to. This gave me a good idea of what I was looking for when fitting a barrel myself. Good luck, JamesIII

thanks all i have filed very little and continue to check it constantly but is still not a consistent lock up trying not to take off to much and since first time if i get to loose a fit then what do you do. if i shut it really hard it locks up then shake it a bit and it opens or raise it to shoulder and it falls open will continue to work at it.

thanks Terry

You're on the right track Terry.
Keep working it slowly until you get the proper engagement.
If you can shut it hard and get it to lock up, it shouldn't take much more.
Make sure you are keeping the latch shelf flat, dont round the edges, you want even latch engagement all the way across the shelf.
Keep it up, you'll get it!!

Spanky is right, your CLOSE!! maybe you even have it by now??

Anyhow, when I get to where you are I switch to a stone, but take heed to the REQUIREMENT of keeping the shelf SQUARE!!!! Go slow and be careful, no need to rush, good luck.. Post up how everything turned out!!!
