New to Forum, old to NEF w/questions at end
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:44:42 AM »
About 18 years ago my dad bought me my first shot gun, a NEF pardner 12ga.  I had some resentment for this decision because it was a cheap single shot, and all the other kids on my junior hunt had nice double barrels, semi's, or pumps.  Now that I am 30, I have learned that my father actually knew what he was doing, and did right by me.  I make every shot count, and to this day when the time comes for some upland game birds, pig, or breaking clays.... I reach past my Rem 870, and grab the ole single.

I have an old russian capture K98k mauser that I was going to sporterize and convert to my varminter.  As it looks I was going to spend ~$600 on all the parts needed to make the rifle how I wanted it.  I also had some serious internal debate on what caliber I was going to go with.  .308, 7mm-08, .243win, .223rem, 22-250 were only some of the choices I was looking at.  I needed a rifle that could do it all, cheap plinking, varminting, white tail, and mule deer.

Last week sometime, in my hours of not being able to sleep, I did some soul searching.  I need nothing more than a single shot to do the work I want.  The price is right, and when it comes to grabbing a firearm with one shot, or many shots, I 99% of the time grab the single.  I started looking back at NEF because of my long history with my pardner, and came to the conclusion that a handi with 3 or 4 barrels would be the way to go.  4 guns for the price of one.

The purchase was authorized through the HDFA (household department of financial affairs) for one rifle in a starting caliber, with an extra barrel in caliber of choice.  I have settled in on a .223rem for the first and a .243 win for the next.  Both these barrels suit my needs the best at this time.

I went to the local Sportsman Unlimited where they have an H&R Ultra Varminter in .223rem with the laminated stock for the best price I can find around here.  I locked my sights in on the rifle, and put it on hold till payday.  I have a good friend that is thinking of getting a rifle for the same reasons, and I encouraged him to go the same route.  The other night we went to the Gander Mountain and on the used rack was NEF Handi-Rifle in .243win with a "Camo-Laminate" stock and forearm (http://www.rifle-stocks.com/Camo_Laminate_Sample.JPG) I love the look of the stock even more than the look of the brown/brown on the H&R ultra. The NEF is also $60 cheaper..... So... onto my questions.

1) I know both rifles are made in the same factory, but is there any difference in construction, metallurgy, or quality between the NEF and H&R receivers/barrels?

2) Because I am the former designated marksman guy that loves the look, feel, and shot placement of the heavier barrels, will the "Ultra" replacement barrels fit the NEF receiver?  Will there be any benefit to t his, or just use the Handi barrels as they are the same... minus the stamp?

Thank you and I am glad to find someone out there loves their budget single shots as much as I do.

First , Welcome Aboard .  ;D

The frame construction on the newer H&R / NEF's are the same , the only difference is the name stamped on it , as for the barrels , the Ultra barrels or Handi barrels will mix and match just fine .

At one time the Ultra's did have a little better bluing but that's about it , as far as acc barrels go the ones listed as Ultra are in most cases the bull barrel style or run in the longer lengths were the Handi's will mostly be 22" the Ultra's will be 24".

The 243 was made in 5 diffrent barrel profiles , the 20" superlite , 22" standard , 22" stainless , 24" bull , and the 24"bull flutted , the 20" is the most inconsistant shooter of the bunch but with some work it too can be a tac driver .

I assumed that it was the same action with a different stamp.  Wife has approved the purchase of the .243 which has the 22" bull barrel.  It will be sent in intimidate for the 24" .223rem bull and a trigger job.  I was going to get the .243 bull fluted because of the weight savings with the ultra barrel, but the 22" should do just fine for a field gun.

My options are this, what route would you all go for?

new ultra .223rem 24" bull with the stock I can deal with
.243 22" bull or 24" bull fluted additional barrel

or

used handi .243rem 22" bull with the stock I like
.223 24" bull or bull fluted additional barrel
$50 less overall

Wakaba

Go with the used 243 if the 2nd letter of the ser # is a N or higher , also the 243 is a great varmint round and can also work well on deer size game .

If you can get the one you "like" for less than the one you "can deal with", I don't see any dilemma. ;D Do take note of the serial number prefix, to get new barrels fitted it needs to start with an "N" or higher letter, they won't fit barrels to older rifles.

Welcome aboard  Wakaba, I agree with the other members, if the one you want is cheaper than the you you can deal with get the one you want. One big caveat, as Stimpy said, be SURE the SECOND letter in the serial number on the frame is an "N" or higher so you can later have the so called high pressure barrels fitted to the frame. We actually do not know what changes barrel fitting may go through when the company is moved to New York state (Remington aka Cerberus has taken over) but at least put yourself in the best position. Although I personally do not care for .243's I do have one and some here have attained excellent accuracy from them. In theory it is really a great all around cartridge good for small varmints to deer sized game. Best of luck and keep us posted....<><....:)

Hi, and Welcome.  I guess I'd go with the rest of the guys and vote for the .243, although I'm not much of a 6mm fan.  I like the lighter, faster .22-250 loads for varmints and heavier 7mm-08 thru 30-06 to .45-70 for deer and larger.  I guess I'd get the rifle and then jump on here and get some more barrels, frames, stocks, etc. and become a card carrying Handiholic. You'll love it.

It's nice to see others appreciation of the single shot.  It has made me a better hunter and marksman over the years, and I firmly believe that is how kids should start out.....and, hopefully, will stay that way.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

I called the shop, and the .243 is a NP, which from the FAQ page is a '00 and after the cutoff for the new barrels.  yay my team!

So with my wife, tomorrow after work I will be picking up my new used-handi.

I really liked the looks of the 7mm-08, and was going to build my mauser in this caliber.  When it came time for the ordering of the barrel, I couldn't find something I liked in stock.  I started asking friends and my dad about different calibers.  He suggested the .243 for the lighter recoil and enough power to drop a deer with proper shot placement.  I took out his old bolt rifle in .243 and I loved it.  I do plan on getting into some of the higher calibers, but I want to start with something I can plink with for cheap...hence the .223rem.  With the money I am saving on the initial purchase of the rifle will allow me to get some more toys. in this order....

.223rem ultra bull flute
.7mm-08
.45-70
.12ga rifle slug

and maybe more, who knows.  Right off the bat the rifle is getting one box of factory .243 rounds, cleaned, and sent to H&R for the .223 barrel and trigger job.
I will post pics when I get the rifle home.

Well it has been a while, and thought it would be time to dig up this old thread.   I put 6rds through the .243 when I started to spook my friend's horses so I stopped.  The rifle was then cleaned and sent out to H&R for the .223rem bull flute.  I got the rifle back and purchased a house, so needless to say I haven't had a chance to get the rifle on the range.  FINALLY this past Sunday I got a chance to send some rounds down range :D  Well after the break in somewhere earlier there, I was tacking in just over 1/4" groups at 50yrds.  After I got m BSA "Sweet .223" 6-18x40 doped in I was shooting the staples out at the 50yrd line!  I love this little rifle, and doubt I will be shooting much more.  The recoil is great on my bad shoulder, and rounds are cheap.

Thanks to all on this forum, and the help I have received through PM's and email.
