Slump.
« on: October 07, 2003, 04:00:41 AM »
I think I'm in a slump. I've accomplished the things I wanted to accomplish with a handgun, but now I'm looking for something more challenging. What's next?  So far I've hunted (and taken) whitetail, big hog, mouflon sheep, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and small game.

Of those, I actually like the small game hunting the best-- believe it or not.  I think it's because I like the still hunting close to home more than anything else.  It's really challenging.  Trophy hunting doesn't interest me.

Maybe still hunting for whitetails, but I can't really do that during the gun season. Could do it during the muzzleloader season, though.

about the type of handgun you've used to take the critters mentioned. So many folks nowadays seem to consider bolt action or single shot, scoped, rifle calibered guns "handguns". If that's what you've used so far, perhaps hunting w/ an iron-sighted, "honest-to-god" handgun would renew the challenge. If that's what you've been using, I'd say you're at the top of your game, and should perhaps try an atlatl. Just an old fart's opinion doncha know.

How about learning to master single action bigbores or ipsic, something that requires you to improve your mental game and state of awareness. Just a thought.

Good luck and be safe,
Scott

Barren ground caribou!  Close shots are possible and they require a hefty slug.

Try traditional archery out.  Get a decent recurve or longbow with no sights and take the time to master the skills needed.  It's a world of difference from hunting with a gun and will give you a break =)

Well, you mention you like small game hunting the best because it's close to home and challenging.  Why not try predator calling with a handgun?  I can almost guarantee that it'll never get boring!  Coyotes, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, and such are pretty challenging for most even with a rifle.

Before I could go hunting my Grandfather (Creek Indian) said I had to be able to touch a dear with my hand.   Yep,  I'm still shooting targets at the range instead of hunting.    No really,  it took a while to figure it out but finally did it.  Try and snatch a few hairs off one.

Ck,
At first I thought he was just crazy and for awhile I actually hated it, but after awhile I started to closer and closer so it became one of those "I'm going to do it just to prove I can." things.  He was amazing with natural camo, and we spent hours by fire discussing it until the ashes were just right.  We used a mix of ash/charcoal, mud and branches to make a very primative gila suit.  It worked perfectly.  Now I open catologs and see all these 3D camo suits and laugh.

BTW I took my first deer with his .44 Ruger at a distance of a whopping 5 feet from the barrel which was about 3 feet from my own feet.  As was laying on the ground on my back and it was a straight shot through the sternum.  A few more steps and she would have been standing on me.

My Brother hunts hogs (don't know what size) with a spear.  The man is a Southern Baptist Minister and must either have a lot of faith in God or he hunts little piggies.  But from the description he gives to the animals he and his friends hunt with those primitive weapons they are something I would rather tackle with a 44.  He says he carries his Blackhawk 44 for backup and I don't say anything, knowing that he would never have time to use it if the hog didn't take too kindly to what he was doing.  But, that's the faith in the Good Lord for ya.

I wouldn't want to try it but if you are looking for something exciting and think that getting back to basics might do it, I wonder if this wouldn't excite ya enough????  Mikey.

Wheeww.
If I was THAT close to the business end of a hog I would rather have a 12 guage loaded with BB's or buck in 3 inch mag. Can you even by shells loaded with BB's anymore?

I'm not so sure. If I had to engage a big hog at close quarters, I'd probably prefer the spear so I could keep the animal away from me. Of course I'm assuming the availaibility of a suitable spear with a stop on it to prevent the spear from lancing too deep.

bowhunting of course.   and when you think you got that dicked,  take your training wheels off of your bow and go after things with a bent stick.  i was told as a young hunter that i would be considered a true hunter when i took my first deer with a bow.   it took me a long time to get that notch in the belt.
