Say hello to my little friend.
« on: October 22, 2008, 03:35:23 PM »
Introducing the Atom Smasher.

17 Fireball with a 22 1/2 inch extractor barrel.

The photos make the barrel look very grey but the barrel matches the matte receiver perfect.

I can not wait to shoot it.

17 cal barrel. Twist rate is 1 in 9". It is 22.5 inches long and .810 dia. 4140 carbon steel. These were made by wilson barrel for Winchester and were sold to a guy in Connecticut at an auction.

Nice stick!
I'm voting 3rd party in this election by writing in Jesus Christ for president.  Sadly even if this were an option most of you would still vote Republican because "It's a two party system."

Did yer get that cuz ya watched the way mine performed at this year's PD shoot? On Saturday morning it didn't miss a time and every time it spoke a PD died even if a bit of head sticking up was all there was to shoot at. Super accurate and very fast. Mine's a half inch at 100 yard shooter at 4000 fps.

But you have to aim it at a 33.3 degree upward angle for it to go the full 2700 miles.  ;D

Yer gonna love it if it's as accurate as my Model Seven Predator. The round truly performs fantastically. I found that inside 300 yards you just put the cross hair on and squeeze the trigger and it's a dead PD unless the wind is really kicking it up. That little 20 grain bullet needed to gain 4000 fps is really light and the wind can play havoc with it at longer ranges.

If the wind is calm (is it ever calm when shooting prairie dogs? ) then 400-450 should be do able with the round I suspect. I was really never able to find out as the wind was just too high when I was where I could shoot that far so I generally used my M700 SPS .22-250 as it bucked the wind better.

Even so at one spot the wind was so high and the range so long I held two mil dots over and as many as three dots into the wind and still had the bullets blown past one. I never did get him as I never got the hold right for both wind and distance at the same time. I came so close several times but just never got it right and finally decided he deserved to live after standing their so patiently waiting on me to get it right for so long.

I am really excited about next years shoot. My 204 was pretty deadly out past 300. I must admit, that wind was tricky. This little jewel has got to preform well.

I wish I could have seen yours shoot this year. I did hear about it!

I may go and buy some rounds tonight and between hunts this weekend give it a try.

Able Ammo had by far the best price on ammo when I was stocking up for the PD hunt this year. At that time of course it was so new to the market pretty much no one had ammo and few could even locate it. I didn't get the dies from Hornady until perhaps August so they too must not have been very readily available.

I think I wound up buying about 30 boxes of ammo from Able plus the three I picked up at the store where I got the rifle. It's a pretty little thing full camo head to toe with a fluted barrel. Mine wears a Bushnell Elite 7-21AO scope which is a scope I think highly of and often recommend for such use. The only thing I'd change about it if I could would be to remove that AO and replace it with side focus.

That's a good looking rifle! I had a similar idea when I saw that barrel on GunBroker, but in .17 Remington. I'm curious how it will shoot, because that $49.99 price tag makes me wonder. If it turns out good, I may buy one to hold for later.

I have the Mueller Eraticator 8.5-25x50 on my .204 Handi and love it.  But I do like the idea of the mil-dot reticle.  I bought another Mueller from a GBO member to put on my .17FB, off hand I can't remember if it was the Tactical or Sport Dot.  I'll have to take a look.

Nice looking firearm.
