new 45/70 owner
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:25:21 PM »
I an new to the forum and looking for a little help. I recently had a friend reload some ammo for me and I am really happy with the performance. I am not sure what powder he used but he loaded hornady 300g jacketed hollowpoints and used 33.6 g of powder alsothe round is about 1550 fps. I think he loaded less powder for accuracy but i am not sure that is what he said( he is out of town) I sighted the rifle in this weekend. It does have a scope and I am shooting very tight groups at 100 yards, 3 shots within 1 inch at 100 yards. It is about 1.5 inches high at 100 yards. the range i used did not go beyond 100 yards. What should I expect to shoot out to about 150 yards, how much drop etc. any help is greatly appreciated

thanks

It should be about 4½-5" low at 150yds, but the only way to know for sure is shoot it at that range.  ;)

Welcome aboard too!!

Welcome to GBO lostinla

the only way to know for sure is shoot it at that range.  ;)

Truer words have never been spoken! I get asked this type question alot and the only correct answer is what Tim said.

Be sure to check your point of impact at closer ranges also.

GOOD SHOOTING

Also try using your scope to it's full potential. I have a circle surrounding the crosshairs.  I use the crosshairs for 100 yds and the bottom of the circle where the verticle crossed the bottom of the circle for 200 yards. This way I don't have to worry about hold over. If you don't have a circle, try using the area of the verticle post where it goes from thick to thin as an aiming point at 200 yds.

Personally I sight my guns so I never have to worry about hold over at reasonable ranges... For example:

Shooting factory loads zeroed at 100 my 30-30 win hits 6 inches low at 200, so I split the difference...
I sight it 3" high at 100 and 3" low at 200... I know that's not very flat shooting but you will be in the kill zone of most animals from 0-200 yards...

Welcome to the forum, This is a good place to hang out, Sarcasm is free and opinions are plentiful, .45-70s are well liked around here and the loads run from squirrel to elephant killers. I prefer trapdoor loads in mine with either hard cast or rem bulk soft points at 405 grain. But the only thing I have more selection of than .45s would be my .357s, You may want to add one to you handie stable real soon. And then a .30-30 and a .44 and a....... well, Its a long list. Enjoy. 8)

I think you will really like the 45/70.  It is by far my favorite Handi barrel.  My .44 shoots well but is a little picky about the load while the handi will group just about anything I feed it.  My favorite paper load is a 300 gr OT hardcast over a load of Trail Boss and I shoot 300 gr Rem HPs over either Varget or Re#7.  Last year I loaded at about 2000 fps and while that was real accurate what it did to a deer was just  too much.  This year I am loading down to 1600 or so and hoping for not so much damage on the back side.
Thanks for the drop table Quick, that explanes why last year when the gun was sighted in at 100 yards it shot so high at 50.  I put one of those HPs right through a nice tenderloin.  Of course being excited and shooting high had nothing to do with it. ;)

Is this a standard Handi or a BC?

Anyone try using one of the mill dot scopes?  I have a tasco on mine, but have not tried the various lengths on it.  Does anyone shoot the Buffalo Bores 300 grain?  The chart shows 100 yard zero and minus 2 at 150, what does 50 look like?  I know most on here load there own, I will try it out this winter, but this season need some factory rounds.  Leverlotions group decent, but the BB seems like a flatter shot to 150.

50 should be just a tad low since the bullet is rising to a 100 yard zero.  Basically negligable to anything other than targets for score.
