Looking for a 25-06 Load
« on: January 11, 2008, 11:05:32 AM »
I have been using Federal 115 gr Nosler Partitions in my 25-06 Handi and they are like lightning bolts on deer.
Now, since I can reload and want to avoid the $30+/box price for the Federals I need a load to work up.

My Lee manual does not list the 115 NP bullets and Nosler does not list my powder, Varget, for the 115 Partition.

Lee does list a 117 grain Hornady SPBT load using Varget that calls for 37 grains of powder.

Do you think this will be a good start for the 115 partitions?

Does anyone have a good load for these bullets using Varget?

Just getting into loads for my 25/06 and have tried Varget on a few diffrent bullets & weights with only so-so results , 2 1/2" groups or larger , 2 powders that have been working very well are IMR4350 and IMR4227 .

The IMR 4227 was kind of a surprise as it was designed as a postol powder and has a very fast burn rate but with the 100 grain Speers it out did even the IMR 4350 . For most loads the IMR 4350 has been the most consistent across the board with H4895 coming a close 2nd .

Not much help but what i have found so far .

Thanks stimpy,
I'll give the Varget a try and start with about 37 grains. Maybe it will work out.
Also have some 75gr Vmax for the 25-06 to try. They should move right along!

Will let you know what happens with the loads.

Here is my load.  My best group with this one measured about 0.15 inches center to center for 3 shots at 100 yards.  Three shot groups in the 0.4 inch or less range off the bench at 100 yards are common.

My 25/06 load is  120 grain Speer boattail with a CCI large rifle  primer and 50.5 grains of IMR4350.  This load will cloverleaf three shots at 100 yds. from my old model Ruger M77.  Before I developed this load the best this rifle would do with any  handload I tried was 1.5" and 2.5" with a couple of factory loads.  I could never get more than mediocre results with Varget powder but don't know if I tried it in 25/06.

Stimpy Where did you get loads for 4227 in the 2506? Most if not all the powders I've used in the 25-06 were sloww burners like 4350  and 4831. The 75 grain bullets are VERY flat shooting

It is out of my old Lyman 45th. edition , just started low and have been working my way up , so far it is working very well . This is the nice thing about having a bunch of diffrent load books to work from .

I'm hardheaded and only have Varget right now so will give it a try anyway.
Just loaded 4 batches for the 75gr Vmax. 46, 46.5, 47, and 47.5

Haven't done anything with the 115 partitions yet.

I'll post results after the session.

Mine liked H4831 and H1000 behind 120gr HPs. Groups between .5 and 1'' the norm.

In a recent conversation with one of the techs for Hodgdons powders.  I ask the tech what they recommend as the best powder for the 25-06.  His advise was H-1000 and his reasoning is as follows:  The 25-06 has a large case capacity and a small neck on the case.  H-1000's burn rate is the most ideal for getting the maximum push for powder burn.  I switched to H-1000 for my 25-06 and haven't been sorry!!!!

Rezz; go ahead and load your 115gr the same as you would the 117gr. 2gr isn't going to make that much difference. Just remember to load light and work up.

I don't have a lot of experience with the 25/06 but the one I worked with shot well with Reloader 22.

Thanks for all the info. Will stick with Varget for a while and see how it does with the 115 NPs but have a feeling that another powder will be needed.

I have another problem/question.

I've just reloaded some 25/06 cases that are once fired from my Handi rifle. I have trimmed them to 2.488 and COL is 3.074
The problem is that the gun is failing to eject some of the cases that have been neck sized only. It appears that the case is not seating flush with the breech face and when the breech is closed the case gets jammed the last little bit. This results in no ejection. I've now noticed that some of the unloaded and unprimed cases are the same way so it is not a bullet issue.

I guess I already know the answer but here goes anyway.

Is it sometimes necessary to full lenght resize cases that are once fired and going back into the same rifle?

If so, it is a good thing I bought that little hammer bullet remover!
Luckily, I have only about 10 of these bullets and 20 of the 75 grain Vmaxs to unload.
The 75s seem ok though and they are at 3.1 COL.
And yes, the cases and primers are both the same for the 2 different bullets. Federal cases and Federal primers.

Any guidance??

Sounds like you have just a mild head space problem caused by the lock-up on the Handi , my 243 needs the sholder bumped back every 2nd loading for this very reason .

Don't think i'd go to all the trouble to pull the rounds , just set them aside till your next trip to the range and make sure you take a cleaning rod to tap the brass out if they stick . As for the others , run 1 through the FL sizer and see if that fixes the problem  .  ;)

Something else you may want to do is polish the chamber , this will help with the sticking also .

Thanks Stimpy.
That much be it. Some of the cases seem ok while the others are a bit sticky.

I have already polished the chamber and will FL resize some cases and load them up.
Was a little afraid something bad was wrong but haven't been doing anything different with this round than I have with the 22-250 and it had no problems.
Evidently the 25-06 is a bit more particular.

Thanks again. That eases my mind some.

I've had a couple of bolt action rifles that gave that same symptom of sticking when the cases actually needed to be trimmed. The case mouth would jam against the end of the chamber and jam up the works. Some have needed the bolt tapped to get the action opened. Just a thought.
My favorite load? 51gr of H4831 with 120gr Hornady HP and I can't afford to shoot Nosler Partitions at paper and have "always" used the comparable weight and style Sierra to work up a load at half the price of the bullet. The Nosler never failed to work in loads developed this way, regardless of caliber.

My remington 700bdl likes 4350 in fairly heavy dose.  I use the Nosler ballistic tip 115 grain.  I have used this load for 10 years, before that my father in law owned this gun and he used same powder for over 20 years.

This rifle has taken prairie dogs to moose.

Love the 25-06

I have a Browning BBR in 25-06.  It's taken over 50 deer with 117-120 Sierra or Hornady bullets.  I like IMR 4350 and 4831.

Rem factory 100 gr Corelokts shoot great also.  I hate to admit it, but I can't build a load that is more accurate for my particular rifle than Rem 100s.
