Best store bought .308 for handi bull barrel
« on: October 14, 2008, 05:27:16 AM »
Just what the title says.  I don't load a t home and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new .308 bull.  Is there any consensus on the best store bought load for it? For accuracy and knock down.  I will be deer hunting with it.

sometimes the cheapest is the best, i have used a lot of different brands and even reloaded a few,
but what seems to shoot very well for me is the 150 grain federal vital shock. every deer i have
taken with this round shows great bullet weight retention and energy transfer.
i hope this helps.

I have used Federal Fusion ammo. Mine likes the 180 grain Fusion the best.  What can I say it hits like a hammer.
P.S. I have a NEF Survivor with the Bull Barrell.

No problem, I've done the same thing!  What's your opinion?

I don't have a handi in 308 anymore, in fact, It has been a long time. Mine shot 180 corelocks with good enough hunting accuracy.

I always liked the 180 gr round nose coreloc when I had a winchester automatic (model 7?).

My .308 isn't a Handi, but the best accuracy and overall performance comes from 168 gr. Winchester Ballistic Silvertips.  I read somewhere that the 168 gr. boatail was best.  I tried it, used it, and am not changing.  It works.  I shoot everything from red squirrels to black bear with it and it is there.  I don't change loads, and it is zeroed for everything. I use a mil-dot scope with it.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

My survivor likes the 150gr Remmington CoreLocs. Not the cheapest out there but they dont break the bank either. They stay inside of a 6 inch circle out to 250 with no hold over

Its been some time since since I had to rely on factory ammo.. I suggest people try Federal Premium ammo. It has always shot well for me.
