H&R 38-55 Target bullets
« on: October 14, 2008, 12:11:39 PM »
What cast and jacketed bullets work best in this rifle? What diameter do I use in jacketed and cast bullets? .375-.377 or what?

You really should slug your bore, the .38-55s tend to be over bored somewhat. Mine really likes 250gr cast bullets at .380 dia it don't shoot jacketed very well at all.

Depends on how old your 38-55 is, those made in 2007 will shoot .379" jacketed bullets good, I use Boer Bullets' 220gr JSP, those made before Marlin started making the barrels in 2007 will only shoot cast bullets .380" or bigger. As Bob suggested, slug your bore and cast the chamber, those made before Marlin made them also had tight chamber necks and won't chamber bullets big enough to shoot good. they need to be neck reamed.
