It takes the Lyman 17A sight inserts, you can go with the Lyman set, or get a set of nice inserts by Lee Shaver that I think are a lot better for just a bit more.

Congrats on the BC! Depends on the powder, I get 150-200fps more than a 22" barrel with 350gr bullets loaded with IMR4198 or H335. But with H4198 and 300gr bullets, only about 25fps more, using Hodgdon 1895 data.  :-\ Those are the only loads I've made comparisons with.

I recently traded off my last Marlin Levergun in 45/70 and decided to go with a BC...I 've been useing 400 gr. hardcast ,and the ole Remmy 405..and a healthy dose of IMR 3031 ..always had good luck ...But after hunting with a little Puma in 44 Mag. and 250 gr. hardcast pushed hard ..I just started noticing my Lever 45/70 was getting more and more safe time...those 44mag.s @ 1700fps.(20in. barrel) really do a number on whitetails..i didn't notice any difference in the performance between the 45/70 and 44 mag. on game they both killed quick and left two big holes.
Sooo... it was perfect time and a great deal on a BC popped up.
Ive always wanted to try 400gr. Hardcast and H4198..I really don't want to make the OLE 45/70 into a magnum but I'd like to use the WHOLE BARREL....
since I'll be carring it around.
From what I read it is a accurate rifle and a hoot to shoot.
Theres a fellow in this neck of the woods uses a Sharlika (spelling?) you know one of those older type long barreled 45/70 BC type. Supposed to have a weaker action or something..
He shoots  300gr. Remmy HPs ,loaded hot and has for years...My gosh the fellow has filled his freezers..
He has nevered chron'ed his load but it is absolutely a death ray on Black Bear and Whitetails. He actually nearly decapitated a couple of deer..

Thanks again for the info.

Like Tim I haven't compared loads between rifles much.  Did have a fellow give me a box of factory ammo in 45-70 and I shot it across the Chrony just for the heck of it.  If I remember correctly it was Federal ammo, I just listed it in my notebook as "Factory FC Classic 300 Gr."

Out of a 16" TC bbl this stuff averaged 1567 FPS.  The BC with the same ammo averaged 1964 FPS.

Not much of a test but interesting I thought.

I've been playing around with a BC for a little over a month now.  Have loaded Goex with 405 cast, shot the Rem's in factory, etc.  I get better groups with 405 grain than anything else.

Love to shoot the Goex off the bench.

Tried loading up some hot stuff, and decided that unless I'm attacked by a herd of mad Grizzlies, it ain't worth the pain......

Fun rifle, more accurate than I am, and Kudos to Tim and the guys who shoot that long stuff.  The short stuff holds as much as I can handle!

Hey, I'm just curious.  What mold are you using?  Also, how many grains of goex?  I just started playing with bp cartridge, but I'm not having that much luck.  I'm casting up with my friend's mold right now, it's a lyman 457132 535gn Postell bullet.  I have two new molds coming today, a 340gn and a 405gn.  Hopefully it improves my groups!

Well, .45-70 was once common as .45 caliber , 70 grains of black powder, then the various bullet weights.  I am using a 485gr NEI mold bullet with a 0.030" veggie wad over 70 grains of Swiss 1 1/2F  powder. Havent Chronied it, but shoots like a dream and can hang with the Sharps until about 400yds then I run out of sight travel, and I am using the low Lyman up front and the Williams TK Peep onthe rear.  If I go to smokeless, I use a reduced load and reach well out past 500, and can hit the Ram 7 out of 10, if I do my part.
Worst thing I find is case capacity with black vs bullet length/seating depth vs barrel throat. This is why I went to an NEI mold its a bore rider bullet, and lets me run a full load of black powder, minimal compression, even though I am using a drop tube, and wad.  Still experimenting, but having fun all the while.
Buckeye, have you got the inserts?  If not hit me up....

Rinella,

I'm shooting 65 grains of Goex, with a home made felt wad lubed on the bullet side and a factory cast 405 grain bullet, round nose. I load this with a Lee Classic loader, trim cased with a file and check length with a caliper.  Kinda' rudimentary stuff.  There are guys on this forum that probably can improve on this several times over.   I can't speak for long range with these loads, but at 200 yards they group well, all in the black on a standard target.  At 100 yards I can hold under 2" off a rest, and with a new barrell that ain't too bad.  The BC is capable of better groups than I am, and the load I'm using probably isn't the very best available for this gun, but its still a pleasure to lauch a big old hunk of lead and not get killed on the other end.  I tried some +p loads for this thing, and you better be off-hand shooting or have some ointment for the sore shoulder.
