Tim's gold hammer
« on: October 25, 2008, 04:07:34 AM »
hi, i'm new to the forum and have been reading about your hammer conversion in faq..very good info...but am confused about a couple things..i went to numrich.com,brought up the 158 hammer(gold) and it shows it to be a new style hammer for use with a transfer bar....my interests lie in getting rid of my transfer bar and i can't find an old style hammer till i go back to the 148 series. I also found the double leg hammer spring on the 148 series.....do i need a 158 series hammer and spring or a 148 series(old style) hammer and spring to eliminate my transfer bar and be able to carry my SB2 on half-cock?

No, just a few, don't want to be selfish and buy up all the gold hammers!! :D I did the 45-120 BC and the 6.5x55, I have one more that I haven't decided what to put it on yet.

Whats the advantage to swapping it out, no transfer bar for hunting purposes? -g

I guess I'll second that question.  I wish my 336s had a transfer bar and not half cock.  In my blackhawk, it allows me to load six safely.  To me it's just as easy to pull the hammer all the way back as it is off half cosk......and a lot safer.

The BIG advantage is the spur is a lot lower, take a look at the pics in the low profile hammer mods in the FAQs. It has a half cock notch to make it safer(not as safe as a transfer bar) so the hammer isn't resting on the firing pin, but the shooter needs get in the habit of pulling the hammer back to the half cock position after loading. Fortunately the ejector will ride over the firing pin and push it out of the way with no harm, I thought maybe it would shear it off but it doesn't.

Since there is no transfer bar, you do not have to worry about keeping the trigger pulled all the way back - more consistent firing pin blows. This can be a REAL problem if you hone down the trigger to a real light pull. I know it happened to me. But no more, I now have the "golden" hammer on one of my frames and will probably do the other before it is all said and done.
