shot my new 44mag
« on: September 28, 2008, 02:49:35 PM »
I bought a 44mag barrel from another poster here and fit it myself (first time fitting).I finally tried it out today. The first 3 shots to test function were all on the box. The next 3 were aimed and went into about 2.5" at 50yds with the open sights. Suits me so far. I bought some medium rings today and mounted a k2.5 Weaver so I can see how well this combo is gonna shoot. Hopefully my boy will use it for deer this fall.

Had 3 of my boys (and a lady that has never shot a gun before) out at the range today.  Gave 2 of them rifles for passing Hunters Ed. so we were playing.  One of the extra guns I took was my 44 Handi, (the 357 had to stay at home :'()  But the story is 150 rounds thru the 2-44s with 4 of us shooting them.  The Handi is one made by Marlin and shoots great.  Yours really does need a little brother, though.  357 is a great one too.   Only reason mine didn't go with us was lack off ammo, can't keep up with demand. :(  DP   By the way, the new shooter is ready to go again.  Everyone needs to get more people involved in the shooting sports.  DP

Or a big brother like a 444!

Has anyone pushed their 44 Handi much past 100 yards?

I have not done a bunch of shooting with mine yet, but seems to like Winchester 240 solid points in the white box. They are around $32/box here; about the cheapest I could buy. I tried a few hand loads, but my 44 (2007) did not like them as well. The Winchesters were just under 1" at 50 yards for three shots. I was getting right at 1800 fps with them too.

Mine really likes Hornady 180 gr xtps with a full load of H110 or 180 gr Oregon trail hard cast with a light load of Trail Boss.  I guess because of the slow twist it does better with the lighter bullets.  Anyway I am more than pleased with it.

Mine does real well with 240's, still need to try some of the 270 Gold Dots and some cast.  And yes, the big brother,(444) is at my house, too. ;D  It seems to shoot as well as the 44.  Just plays a little rougher is all. ::)  DP

I took a quick trip to the range this evening with the 44mag with scope attached. Dark was coming fast and I only had 10 rounds of handloads at home so I didn't get much shooting. Took me 7 shots to get the scope to point of aim, then I put the last three into 1.75" at 50yds. Plenty good for hunting but I'm thinking if I spend some time cooking up a load that this barrel likes I might really have something here. My handloads were 240gn Hornady xtp with Win 296 powder that I had left over from a super blackhawk that I recently sold.

Good shooting. 2" is plenty good at 50 yards. In our section of the state, most deer are shot under 100 yards with the majority under 50.

Mine shoots the Winchesters 240gr white box ammo very well also.  I have had some decent luck with reloads using bulk 240's with 2400 and 296.
