Question on Buffalo Model 45-70
« on: October 05, 2008, 03:32:19 PM »
Maybe covered before but couldn't find it. Have a chance to buy one but do not like straight grip stocks. Can I order a regular one from factory? I could add a grip to the stock but am concerned with looks too. I have made many stocks for trap guns so maybe order one from someone. Any ideas from you old pros?

ftupton,
Here's a link that may suit you just fine.

http://www.gunstocksinc.com/

These good folks are in Iowa and couldn't have been more helpful when I embarked on a prooject similar to what you're describing.  Take a look at their site and then call if you have specific questions.  They advertise on this forum but their banner isn't on every page.  Lots of options.  Here's what I did with mine......

Eww, pretty....

I have a spare pallet wood set with schnabel fore end (long story), but the fore end would be real short on a BC.

Thanks for the replys. Stuffit, good job and I did bookmark their site. I like the laminate style, am going to check on getting the gun today then if I get it proceed. Should be a fun project. Have built probably a hundred trap guns but am excited about a 45-70. Nothin like big lead.

As the photo below shows, i put a schnable fore end off a 20 gauge on my BC. makes the barrel look way long but it handles just fine for me..

Thanks for the kind words.  My purpose in posting the picture was primarily to show that a complete amateur (like me) can finish and fit a stock on the BCs.  I took my time and followed Ed's (at Gunstocks inc) advice to the letter both from the print-out that came with the stock and some lagniappe phone advice.  I embarked on the project because, shooting off the bench with what I'd considered standard hunting loads, the cresent steel butt plate was killing me.  The Browning sling, Limbsaver recoil pad and Mercury recoil reducer in the stock, along with the added weight of the new wood made shooting the rifle much more fun.  I'm not sure what the total was but it wasn't really exorbitant and the end product made it well worth while.  It was a project begun out of a need to keep my body intact that became a labor of love and didn't turn out too badly, I don't think.  But for having the right start and the right wood, Gunstocks Inc deserves the credit.  Thanks again for the words of appreciation.

Please tell which of the available stock sets yoo used.  That's real nice looking and I'm guessing very servicable.  At the very least I want the Hntsman fore end.

I could probably stand one like that.
Maybe not quite so much cheek rise.

Guys,
What I got was the result of a phone conversation with the proprietor/craftsman there.  I looked at the menue of what was available for the BC and then called on the phone.  What I have is in American walnut with the beaver tail forend and a monte carlo type buttstock.   I did request that he select the wood and that added a bit but not much, actually.  And, if I wanted another one, I'd try the same route.   Since the stock is not finished, the height of the cheek rise is pretty much left up to you.  I wanted mine for a scope sight.

These stocks are well worth the price and when they say minor inletting that's what they mean. I did one for a contender and it really turned out nice. Good people to work with and 3 thumbs up. Would I order another one ---- already did.

Those stocks are really a good buy, and they leave enough material on the stock to shape it to your liking.

I shaved down the cheek rise, which for me was waaaaay to high, and also the pistol grip area I thinned down the contour to match the frame, and to balance to looks of the reduced cheek rise.

They leave plenty wood on the stock believe me, in order to properly fit, and I wasn't shy about taking off a lot of shavings, and I wasn't worried about taking off too much either.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
