Colt .45 LC Third Generation SAA?
« on: September 26, 2008, 04:52:45 PM »
How strong are these and can I reload shell to a manuals maximum or near max. load without fear of injuring it? I know they have collectors value and are highly sought after, already but, do any here shoot these guns?

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

ALL Colt SAA revolvers and ALL Colt Clones should be run ONLY at black powder pressure levels.

+1!!!!!!!!!

I don't think it's a real good - or smart - idea to try to hot rod a SAA.  'sides, a 250 gr .454 (.452) bullet @ 800 - 850 fps ain't to shabby for most anything that needs doin'

absolutely stay away from ruger level loads in that gun. Stick to loads that are listed for colts and colt replicas and the gun will last your lifetime. Its to nice of a sixshooter to risk destroying!!

Never said "hot rod (Ruger level loads)" or anything of the such, and have no intention of using such loads. Just curious about loads listed in today's load manuals and the ability of this Colt to withstand the pressures they generate. Are they capable of this?
GBs response sounds like they are not, is this the case? I have several manuals but, nothing with black powder loads or the equivalent.

Most all manuals have two and some have three load levels for the .45 Colt. The bottom level is the standard SAAMI level same as old black powder level loads. Those are what you want. Any book with multiple levels in it use ONLY the lowest level they list. Use nothing that remotely mentions Ruger or TC in it.

Generally speaking that means you can push a 250-260 grain cast bullet to about 900 fps or so.

its mostly the first generation colts that are the weak ones. The second and third generation colts are just as strong as any of the replicas and in the hands of shooters like elmer keith saw some serious loads. Some were even converted from 44 spec to 44 mag and lived through it. I guess if it were mine id stick to the 900 fps stuff. Like i said earlier there just to nice of a gun and to valuable to risk damageing.

Lloyd, this was my original suspicions, I had no intentions of pushing it too far. Thanks for chiming in.
