I am giving strong consideration to getting a new 45ACP to be used mainly as a CCW. I would also do some range shooting but no serious Bullseye competition with it. I would also consider a 40 cal also but not a 9 mm as I already have a small 9 mm for a CCW. I am not sure what I really want. I have looked at Springfield, Kimber, Ruger, Colt Commander and also looked at the CZ's. Kahr would also be in consideration but I am not sure if they do anything in 45 ACP. I don't want to spend a ton of $$$ so something custom would be out. I read good reviews on the ParaOrdinance but they are also on the pricey side. I know that I have thrown a lot of options out on the table but figure that with the amount of folks who are on this forum that at least some of you must have some experience with the brands mentioned. I read the other posts about the problem with Springfield's service department and I am leaning away from Springfield for that very reason. I have had dealing with Ruger's service department and they went way above the call of duty in repairing one of my auto's at no charge. Any help any of you can lend to me would be appreciated. I want a good gun that is reliable yet won't break the bank. Maybe I am looking for something that isn't there!!! Thanks for your help.

A guy at the range got a new stainless S&W chiefs special auto in 45 auto. Very nice. Great ergonomics and compact too.

just recently i went thru a search for a .45. this is what i found. now my needs were/are different from yours as mine needed to be a truck gun, not a ccw gun, but you may find some threads of interest for you in making a decision. each manuf. seems to make smaller models.
at first i was determined that i wanted it on a 1911 frame. dan wesson was the one that i would have gotten, the kimber a close second. then i chose not to get the 1911.
i liked colts, sigs, and smith and wesson. i chose a sig 220 because i have a sig now and i liked it's reliability, or may i say it's percieved reliability. if given to me free i would have taken either.
i thought kahr made a .45, but i could be wrong, and i like them.
i'm not sure if this helps but it is just my take.

I have had some bad experiences with colts in the past. I own a springfield armory 1911A now and haven't had any problems at all. I would suggest anything but a colt. BigBill

I had two colt 45's a combat comander that wouldn't feed and a Series 80 Gov. Model in nickel the F & R sights came loose and I hardley shot it? So their both gone!!! I even had a 357mag Python that the cylinder did move into place until you pulled the trigger great quality?? Thats when I changed over to Ruger Revolvers (357 & 44mags) and never had a problem and bought a Springfield Armory 1911A 45ACP and never had a problem with that either except I had to polish the feed ramp so it would feed those big soup bowl speer 200 JHP bullets. My sights never came loose on my SA 1911A like they did on my model 80 COLT!!!!!! Three lemons in a row of COLTS is enough for me!!!

lord I do understand tha frustration an reasoning behind your actions-- i have sworn off manuf. for tha same reasons before. chrysler, as an example. i'm thinkin it's ok - if we all fell in love-oh well, ya know.

What about a Glock? I've been looking at a G-30 and I like what I see. It is light and easily concealed. The grip is a little short, but you can buy floor plate finger rests that solve this problem for range use. I also looked at the Tarus PT- 145 Millenium pistol. It is light and feels good in the hand. It is about the same size as the Glock, but the grip fills the hand a little better without an adapter. It is double action only and priced a lot more reasonable than the others. I have owned several Tarus products, two autos and three revolvers and I have always been pleased.

Hey, thanks to all of you who offered advice on the different variations of 45 ACP's as there sure are a lot of them to choose from. I still haven't made up my mind as to what I want to do. I know the Kimber is out as well as the ParaOrdinance because of the price tags. I will look at the Taurus collection as I have heard good things about them from other shooters. I know there has been some bad press on this forum about Springfield's also but you can get that with any company. Just unfortunate that it had to happen. Has anyone ordered anything from Davidson's and had it shipped to a local FFL daaler?? How did Davidson's price compare to the local dealer after the ususal haggling over price?? Again, thanks to all who put a post on this thread as your information was very helpful.

I own and shoot Colt 1911A1 full size blue and stainless and Commander and Gold Cup, King Cobra 4" bbl a 6" bbl, Anaconda and an H-Bar there isnt a damned thing wrong with COLT PERIOD!!!! As far as failure to feed DONT limp wrist these pistols or they wont feed. Quit buying the cheap 6.00 mags and expect them to feed properly. Right out of the box Colt is fine!! They are healthy enough financially to have bought back the Rampant Colt that sat on the building for years and was sold to a museum by previous managment. As a matter of fact I am quite TIRED of the Colt complaint without any basis at all period exclamation point end of story!!!!!

I have a Colt 1911 series 70, bought it new almost 30 yrs ago maybe more, been a good companion. When I started trying out diff. bullet types I experienced feed problems. So I found a Smith that was well recommended for 1911's. He polished the throat, changed the spring and what ever he did to make it feed properly which it does now for $100. He explained about the ball ammo for which it was designed. Upon leaving he said "that is one fine gun and that if I ever thought about unloading it give him a call". I have two other Colts about as old but they show the same quality.
