Diameters and foster/sabot help
« on: September 28, 2008, 11:50:34 PM »

Ok here goes,
20 gauge lyman foster is .605 20 gauge bore is .615. What happens to the .010 going down the bore??? That is .005 on any side. Does the differance come from the Idiot factor of someone using chokes like a full one. and why dont they lube the slug?? I am very clear on the sabots. I also would like to know why you could not or could use a slug thst is bor diameter, lube it, and have it engage the rifeling like my 4570???
help me understand. I see to much lock stepping to the traditional ways. I just would like to know. I guess I think to much.

foster slugs are made of soft lead and hollow based so they expand to fill the bore when fired. This also allows them to squeeze down so they can be fired thru any choke configuration. Fireing them thru a rifled bore will cause the rifeling to be fouled with lead and accuracy will drop rather quickly.

The foster slug was made for a smooth bore not a rifled one

I figured some would respond this way. I was talking of a lyman
foster cast slug with a diameter of .605 and the 20 bore of .615. I know that it is not to be used for rifeled barrels but what if I paper patched it with a hard cast alloy then they should be ok in either.  I  need input now!!!!

If I'm not mistaken , those cast slugs are supposed to be used with the standard plastic shot cup and star crimp shot shells. The plastic cup takes up the space in the bore. I'm also pretty sure they are meant to be used in smoothbores.
