What kind of scope for 500 S&W
« on: October 06, 2008, 02:52:26 AM »
Are you guys using shotgun scopes on these??? I have tried a couple of 100-150 dollar bushnells and none of them would hold zero from the recoil...

You might try the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32.  It has a lot of eye relief.

Ditto Swampman's recommendation, I've had a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 in low Leupold PRW rings on mine for about 120 rounds so far, works great.  ;)

I might give the NIKON a try... To start with the scope kept sliding... So finally I added a 3rd ring and it still wouldn't give any kind of group... With Iron sights It shoots pretty decent.... I don't use the gun much but its about to be my new hog hunting gun when I'm in the boat... I want to see how the big 500 performs...

Did you lap the rings before installing the scope? Having 75-100% contact with the rings makes a big difference and it prevents scope damage.  ;)

I had a Nikon Prostaff 2x7 Shotgun Scope on my Encore 500 and it broke after around 50 shots.  I put a Nikon Monarch 2-8x and so far so good.

I've been hankering to try the Burris Ballistic Plex with the 45-70, 500 S&W should be similar.  I prefer 3-9x magnification at least, but I'm weird... ::)

The Prostaff has the same lifetime warranty as all other Nikon scopes including the Monarch,  did ya get it fixed or replaced?

I sent the prostaff back to Nikon and they sent me a brand new one.  However, I chose not to try it again and purchased the new Nikon Monarch.  They have constant (suposedly) 4" eye relief which is a little better than the 2x7 prostaff.

Very little, .1"-.2" more if you use their specs, not much practical difference. Considering they're shotgun scopes, they should work great as shotguns can have considerably more recoil than most rifle chamberings including the 500S&W. But a Monarch could fail just as easily due to defects, so I wouldn't blame the Prostaff, all of mine work great.  ;)
