Older H&R model 258
« on: September 16, 2008, 12:04:15 PM »
I am in the process of bidding on a mid 1980's H&R model 258 on Gunbroker. This is a combination 20 gauge/.44 Magnum in stainless. The pictures look good and description by seller sounds good.
My question is concerning the .44 magnum barrels of that model. Are there any eccentricities
of chamber or bore for that model such as there are on some of the newer ones?I do plan on handloading for it so any info would be appreciated.Thanks.

I think you will find that its a Nickel finish not SS , I might be wrong but as far as I know H&R did not do SS frames till this year , also may have the over - bore that the older 44 mag barrels had were you would need oversized cast bu8llets to get it to shoot well .

Tim may know more on the older models that I do ., nice looking rig BUT i'd have to think real hard to spend any more money on it .

Sorry, other than what Stimpy said about the frame finish, I can't offer any advice on the bore other than a recent discussion on the 44mag Shikari as having a good bore, I would expect all of the original H&Rs to be good shooters, as far as I know the overbore 44mags came about after the 1986 closing of the original H&R.
