Turning Contender pistol into rifle?
« on: August 05, 2003, 03:05:36 AM »
I'm looking at the options for setting up a prairie dog rifle for my son. I already have a Contender pistol. I've been thinking of putting a rifle stock and rifle barrel on it. Caliber will be .223. Stock will need to be a youth stock. What do I need to make it all work? Just the barrel and stock and scope mount? Or do I need a forearm also?  About how much can I expect to pay for this?

Is it better to get a Handi-Rifle?  It'll probably be cheaper.

Questor

I had the same decision to make a few years ago.  I wanted a light single shot rifle that I could let my three last children hunt deer with.  After lots of looking and research I got a youth model Handi-rifle in 243.  They make the same rifle in 223.

It is light to carry and I got the complete gun and put a Tasco World Class scope on it for about the price of a barrel for the TC.  It shoots great and they like to carry it.  I got a adult type stock at a gun show for $35.  It was attached to a 12 guage shotgun.  I put the adult stock on it and I enjoy shooting it.  The shotgun kickes so bad I doubt that I will ever put the stock back on it.

I still am looking at converting one of my TC frames to a rifle but every time I get to the point of buying a barrel for over $200 I go out to the New England site and see that they have a better deal.

By the way, my 4 older boys all got their first deer with a H&R Topper in 30-30 cal that I got at a pawn shop for $45.  They used to fight over who got to use it when we went hunting.  I still have it too but the 243 kicks less.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

Yes! they make a 30-06, and a 308 and a 280, all for under $200 and if you want several barrels, you can buy 2 for the price of on TC barrel.

Web site is: http://www.hr1871.com/

Rudy you'll need the butt stock and fore end plus barrel with base, rings and scope. As short as your son is the youth stock is likely gonna be required. The stock sets are available in both wood (which can be shortened still more if needed) and Rynite from the factory. Check out Ed's prices as he is likely to beat anyone else's price unless you find a used one from an individual. If Ed has them used he still might be the cheapest.

You might want to also consider the 6 TCU. With 58 or 65 grain Hornady V-Max bullets or Nosler BTs it won't kick much more than the .223 and won't likely be a problem for him in recoil for shooting PDs but can be loaded with heavier bullets and make a passable deer rifle for close shots for him also.

I did the exact same thing for my daughter. If you order a new barrel be sure its a new G2 23" barrel. It's a full bull barrel and the extra weight will help out a lot on a varment rig. Toped it off with a Tasco Mag V scope. I believe its a 4x16x50 with target turrets. A really nice setup and not a lot of money.  KN
