.204 ruger chrono'ed with remington sps varmint?
« on: July 27, 2008, 02:46:49 PM »
I bought a remington sps varmint with 26" barrel in a .204 ruger.  I was wondering if anyone has chrono'd one in my setup with a 32grain hornady vmax?  I'm guessing the chances are slim, I don't have the money to buy a chrono and don't know anyone with one.  I went out shooting the other day and zeroed at 100, or at least I thought.  I shot at 200yds and was hitting about 1" high?  I'm going out tomorrow to shoot again at 100,200, and 300 to see where I'm hitting.  Just wondered if it was running hotter than advertised on thier website since it's a 26" barrel?  For what it's worth I'm really happy with the rifle, it's my first remington, I've always owned savages and been really happy with them.  I wanted to try something different, this will be my coyote gun.  I was not impressed with the non-free floated stock, but you get what you pay for.  The trigger is very nice, I think it's in the same ballpark as the accu-trigger, but I also like my triggers a little heavier because I'm often shooting with gloves on in the winter.  My first three rounds of hornady 32gr vmax at 100 could be covered with a nickel.  I had to look twice because two went through the same hole making it slightly oval, I was very happy.  I tried some hornady 40 grains and it was grouping about 1-1.5" then problems started.  As the barrel heated my groups really started opening up, I'm guessing it might have to do with the non-free floated stock?  Anyway I did manage about a 2" group at 200 yards while it was still pretty warm.  I ended the session shooting my last two rounds of 40grains at 330 yards into about a 4" group.  The barrel was really hot because I had places to be and couldn't wait for it to cool off and the gun really didn't like the 40 rounders, I can't wait to see what the 32's will do tomorrow at that distance.  I'm starting out at 200 tomorrow and going to zero there and see where I'm hitting at 300 and 100.  Also, I'm using a bushnell elite 3200 fixed 10x scope, which I'm also really happy with it.  I'll post a range report tomorrow.

Not sure what you mean ? Are you using factory Hornady ammo with the 32 grain Vmax or reloads with a 32 grain Vmax. You can add 40-50 fps to your velocity numbers for 26" barrel - which you will see is insignificent in terms of trajectory at ranges where the 32 grain bullets will be relevent. Zero 1" at 100 to be on at 200. My REM barrel heats rapidly and groups open up after 3-5 shots in under 2 minutes. It also seems to take 2-3 rounds to foul barrel and get back to the best accuracy groups.

I've not chrono'ed this particular load but generally speaking Hornady ammo runs right at or very slightly faster than advertised velocity in 26" barrels.
