Barrel shorting question .
« on: May 14, 2003, 11:22:36 PM »
I have a Ruger Super Blacbhawk in a 7 1/2 stainless . I may get the barrel shortened to 6 " . Can anyone give me a ball park figure on the price of having this done  . I now it depends on the gunsmith but just wondered roughly how much thanks .

It might be cost prohibitive to shorten your barrel. You could always attempt to trade your's for for a 5.5". The cash you'll need might be less than the gunsmith work of cutting, crowning and silver soldering on the front sight. You may contact Ruger about fitting a 5.5" barrel on your's and still keep your 7.5" barrel.

I've had two barrels shortened by Mag-Na-Port. Their work if top notch, and while it's there, you might as well have it ported!

Why would you bother shortening such a great barrel length.   It's sight radius is great, it's power is super, and you can readily find holsters for it.
Why pay for the required work, which may not be done correctly anyway?

I found a 5 1/2 SuperBlackHawk better at the bench off sandbags, as far as recoil goes, than a 7 1/2 in Bisley which I sold off.   But otherwise I miss, to some degree, the longer sight radius and increased power of the longer barrel....

I wouldn't do it...

Amen to having Mag-na-port shorten the bbl.  Ken does excellent work.  As for trading it for a 5.5", Why?  If it shoots well and you like the gun otherwise, (action smoothness, trigger pull) make it the way you want to.  I have had Rugers shortened to 6 1/2", 5 1/2", 5", and 4" (loved the 4").  I like the balance of a longer bbl but these "old eyes" shoot much better with the sights a bit closer together.  Make it the way you want it, take it out and shoot it and enjoy.    44 Man

Send this guy an e-mail and describe what you want done.  He's one of the best in his trade.

I have a Ruger Vaquero with a 5.5" and I'm going to have it shortened to 4 5/8 for fast draw.  Nice guns!

Instead of getting my SBH 7 1/2 shortened I picked up another stainless SBH in a 4 5/8 . I think  made the right move . Love it .

You'll love it.  In the mid-70's, my old M29 gave up from metal fatigue, so I cut my best SBH to 4 5/8 and installed BH mule ear hammer with my own trigger work.  Even though the holsters have taken most of the barrel blue, it will never be for sale.  A true "holster" gun.  That means a lot to a couple of us since we "wear" a handgun rather that "carry" one.  You get to do a lot more with one that's with you all the time and not laying in the truck or on the bunk.  The epitome of the weapon of opportunity.   Luck.
