More Laminate flooring
« on: August 20, 2008, 04:08:56 AM »
We went ahead and installed more of this stuff in the area which goes down to the basement. This was just four steps down from the main floor to a landing where one can either go outside, or go on down to the basement.
I was really reluctant to install this stuff on the four steps down to that landing (read slip hazard?) but the Wife wanted it so after much argument we decided that the Trim Strip that is on the far edge of each step would be what would really arrest a fall in the event of slippage?...the material that we replaced was of the old vinyl type and could be slick but I think lesser than the new snap together board type.

At any rate, the job is done and came out well. This installation was still a Love/hate relationship but the overall durability for the Kitchen (done in March) and the Dining room (done 2 years prior to the kitchen) has been good.
I guess that I am recommending this stuff but warn all to be patient on the installation.
I still dont know how durable it will be on those steps...they will get a good workout because of the hunting, reloading, and Laundry chores.

I just had my house done.  We looked at laminate and the regular hardwood.  The laminte was easier to put down but there were other issues.  The laminate was about the same in price as the hardwood, so we went with Bruce 3/4 inch plank.  The Bruce was $129 a box and the laminate was $119. I believe it was only $350 difference in the styles we wanted.  It made the house louder and the floor harder but it looks great.  The only thing that made me sway around from laminate is that it can't be refinished.  I've also seen laminate (Pergo) that was completely worn out after being installed in my wife's old workplace.  The high heels the women were wearing just tore the finish off of it in less than a year.  You should be OK, yours won't have near as much traffic.

Mine was the cheaper stuff for sure (perhaps 3/16" thick planks) This stuff started out in the $50 range four or five years ago but now a lot of it can be had for $23 (bottom of the line) and you get 10 planks per box that are perhaps 43" long x 9" wide.
30-30man...excellent point on being able to refinish your 3/4" Bruce but not the laminate. This will save mucho dinero down the road and perhaps make the real stuff cheaper than the Laminate.
