encore .260 remington handloads
« on: July 29, 2008, 02:50:38 PM »
does anyone have load data for the .260 using 100 grain bullets? i have shot some of the hornady 129 gr. bullets @ about 2250 fps., and while accuracy is good, expansion [on the old 1 gal. milk jug] at 100 yds. is not impressive. i am thinking that the lighter bullet  with more velocity would make this round viable for deer/antelope to around 250 yds. this is for a 15" barrel.

At that velocity, a Nosler 120 Ballistic Tip will work. Many of us use that bullet in the 6.5 JDJ @ 2250-2400 fps. The 120 Speer also has a good reputation @ that velocity range. 2400 fps should be easily achieved out of a 260 Rem. in 15".

The Hornady 129 grain bullet you are using is just fine for deer and expansion will be perfect.

Your milk jug test will not deliver true big game performance results.  Try it on a deer and you will see it will perform higher then your expectations.

I have shot deer at 100 yards with a 10" T/C Encore in 7mm-08 Remington using handloaded Hornady 139 Grain bullet with IMR-4064 with excellent accuracy and expansion.

Ditto on the 120 NBT.  I used Varget, and that 14" 260 has taken several whitetail, and a cow and bull elk with the same load-All 1-shot kills

Try the Nosler 100 grain Partition under AA 4350.  Its a good load for deer and antelope.

Thanks to you all for the response to my question. I guess my concern about expansion was raised when I whacked an identical jug sitting next to the the first with a Speer 150 gr. F.S.P @ around 2300 fps. The result was dramatically different ! I confess that neither of these loads have been chronographed , so velocities are guess work at best. More homework needed on my part. Thanks again for your attention on this matter. I'm thinking that i will try the Hornady 100 gr. spire point bullet, with a powder yet to be determined. Any help on that subject will be appreciated!!! dinger.
