Russian Nagant 1895
« on: January 18, 2009, 07:14:51 PM »

Great little lite packing gun when equipted with this .32 H&R mag cylinder.    I've been shooting it for several yrs. loaded with 8 grs. 2400 or #9 and a 115 gr. cast bullet for 1100 fps.  Very accurate has killed a 100 or so jackrabbits.  I think the whole outfit cost me around $125.  I know you can still get the guns not sure about the cylinders.
For awhile someone was making cylinders in 7.63 Mauser but I don't see them anymore.  Great old gun.

Interesting conversion, your's is the first that I've heard of with a 32 H&R cylinder.  I've seen cylinders offered in I believe 32 S&W, I may be wrong on the cartridge.  As I recall there were 'issues' with getting the timing right and whether it was worth it.  Regardless, you've got a nice setup going with that rig and obviously it's a shooter!

This cylinder was originally in .32 ACP but by rechambering to .32 H&R it now shoots .32 ACP, .32 S&W .32 S&W long or .32 H&R mag.

I know the original nagant caliber is rarer and a little harder to get but how does it perform in relation to the .32s?  The reason is I have 3 of them and am wondering if it's worth it to get another cylinder.  How are the ballistics on the 7.62 nagant round?

The original Nagant load is said to be a 108 gr. bullet at between 1000 and 1100 fps.

I have never seen a 7.62x38 round break 800 fps from an 1895.
That is what the Fiocchi rounds do. The yellow box "target" ammo
does about 650 to 675 fps. I have not tried the Hotshot brand yet
so I am  not sure about it.

SS, the velocity I posted came from "cartridges of the world".  Your probably right ,the velocity you posted is closer to what I thought before I looked it up in COTW.

Original loads may have produced that velocity, I have never tested an
original Soviet military cartridge.

I think, because many of these revolvers are over 100 years old, factory ammo is loaded to very low pressure.  Basically 'target loads' only.
