Magnum bolt heads on a short action Savage bolt
« on: July 16, 2008, 02:39:16 AM »
I have a single shot VLP (varmint low profile). I am interested in knowing if the magnum bolt heads will fit the short action bolt. I have tried several magnum cases and they would easily clear the ejection port. Feeding would not be an issue, since it is a single shot. Thinking it might make a great barrel swap project.

Savage has made both CRF and push feed short action magnum bolt heads.  The CRF should fit right in but you will need to have the action machined if you want an ejector.  The push feed is used on the new center feed actions and you will need a different firing pin I believe.  The long action push feed head could also be cut to fit and then should drop in.

Maybe this will help:

Here are some of the different bolt head configurations used in the last several years and the most current.

L to R
- short action (7/16" lugs)
- short action controlled round feed(1/2" lugs)
- long action (1/2" lugs)
- new short action heavy magnum (9/16" lugs)

The new heavy magnum bolt head requires the new relieved front baffle,
(shown to the right) and also a longer firing pin. The new heavy magnum bolt head is replacing the short action CRF bolt head, as the CRF is not needed on the new center feed magazines for the WSM line of cartridges.
