Wanted a T3 Tikka until I held one yesterday, I am now considering a Steyr Prohunter. I have searched different forums with little real life info on the prohunter models. I have found a Forester model (7mm Mag) new in box for $449.00. How is this price. Prefer synthetic model but may have to settle for the wood stock. Any info on accuracy, dependability, trigger, etc. will be helpful. THANKS

The Steyr Pro Hunters are very good guns. In fact, their triggers are excellent like the Tikkas.

The problem, as I was informed, is that the importer of the Steyrs dropped them from their line. As such, I believe that they are no longer going to be imported.

Accordingly, some people believe that this will raise resale value, while others believe it will do the exact opposite. However, regardless of resale value, very few people can dispute their great quality, dependability, and accuracy.

That notwithstanding, you must weigh all of the above with the fact that warranty work (if ever needed) will essentially be nonexistent.

That said, is $449 a good price? YES. You probably found this gun on clearance as a dealer is probably trying to get rid of them. Still, these guns, depending on model, usually start $100 more than what you found them. I have seen some Steyr Pro Hunters as expensive as $700.

I have never held a T3 in my hands, but it seems that virtually everyone dislikes them, but love the old Whitetail Hunter model. That's a shame. I hope that Beretta (Tikka) realize their mistake and bring back the WH.

I own a Steyr SBS Prohunter in 243 It is the most accurate centerfire I have owned or shot for that matter.The action is about as sweet and smooth as anything.In my opinion you couldnt ask for a better rifle.

Steyr's are good guns---I just worry about spare parts----as I have a Steyr M9 pistol on lay-a-way----stealing it for $329 NIB.

I love my Tikka T3---- BTW----I actually feel its an improvement over the WTH---which just seem bloated and too heavy.

My hunting partner has a Steyr Pro Hunter (camo) in .270 Winchester. This is the only Steyr I've had experience with; however, I would be very hesitant to recommend one based on my experience with this one.

It is not a very accurate rifle. With factory ammo, we are lucky to get 2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards. Often groups are more like 2.5" to 3" Despite having 24" barrel, velocities are a full 100 fps slower than my Savage 116 FLCSAK with a 20.25" barrel. After careful reloading, it will on occassion shoot a 5 shot group of 1" at 100 yards. The frustrating thing is the next group may be right back to 2". We have tried tons of different ammo, 2 different scopes, 2 different rings, etc. - same results. The end result is he hunts with a Marlin Lever action 95% of the time instead.

Another thing I don't like about it is the flimsy stock. The forend is just as flimsy as any of the lower end "tupperware" stocks found on most cheaper synthetic stocked rifles. I would expect more from a gun that had the price tag this one had.

He's stuck with this rifle. His wife bought it for his birthday a couple of years ago and she would know if he got rid of it.
