219 Zipper improved
« on: July 25, 2008, 06:03:47 PM »
Hi Guys,

I just got in my heavy barreled H&R from being completely overhauled and rechambered and i thought I would mention the cartridge, "219 Zipper improved" and ask a question. What is the difference between the 219 Zipper Improved and the 22X30-30 Improved? With the new chambering though, velocity is 250 to 300 feet per second faster than what it originally was as a factory 223 and accuracy is much better to boot. I also had problems with cases sticking in the chamber before i had the chamber recut and now after over 200 rounds later, i have not had the first case get stuck. Do any of you know anything about the 22X30-30 improved or 219 Zipper improved and what are your thoughts on the cartridges?

Sooter Wel come a board, I can any thing about the 2 improved cambers you spoke of.
I bad a 22 hornet that shot like a shotgun, I recambered to 219 Zipper, had trouble
ejecting till I started make brass out of 25-35, not 30-30. I am getting close to fps
as 22-250, with 52 gr sierra HPBT bullets and ample dose of imr 4895 powder.

Good luck Marv.  in N. E. Texas by God

The 219 Zipper Imp and the 22-30/30 Imp are basically the same, but there are quite a few different shoulder angles and neck length. Some remove the rim and cut an extractor groove like the Aardvark which has been made in several calibers 6mm and 30. The 30-30 case has an ideal case volume and is used for BR competition always improved.

The 6mm Aardvark being the most famous which is more or less a
6mmx30/30 imp with the rim removed and an extractor groove milled for bolt guns and controlled head space. Even though the xx- 30/30 Imp has a rim, it should never be used to head space the round on the rim but the datum should be on the shoulder.

The 219 Zipper Imp due to high velocity should have a 1-14" twist for best accuracy.
The 223 with its 1-9" twist is not the best suited for conversion.

I do not know if it makes any difference or not but i am using 375 winchester brass and am turning the case necks. My chamber also has the 40 degree shoulder on it and the neck is just over a 1/4 inch in length. I believe i miked it out at .300 if i'm not mistaking. The bullet that i am shooting is hornadys 60 grain hollow point and have chronograhed it at 3,500 feet per second. it will shoot a little faster but not near as accurately. Three shot strings at 200 yards measure right at 7/8th inch off sand bags.

The .219 Wasp, and Donaldson Wasp .....

Sooter, have you considered the .219 Wasp?  Or .219 Donaldson Wasp?

Both are derived from the 'Zipper,' and were popular benchrest rounds in their day (shortly before or after WW2).

Hi Cougar,

I had a 219 donaldson wasp made last year along with a 6mmx30-30 improved. I'm now waiting on my 7x30 waters and am really looking forward to it as i will probably make it my no.1 deer gun for this years hunting season. I also went with the improved version like what i did on the 6-30-30 and 219 Zipper. I can see why the wasp rounds were used for bench rest, they are unbelivably accurate from these kinds of single shots. I have taken crows and coyotes out past 300 yards with mine and really enjoy shooting them.
