A bronze Parrott rifle ???
« on: July 26, 2008, 07:26:56 AM »
I usually have several cannon projects going and recently two unrelated ones were finished around the same time so I thought I would put them together to see how they would look. The Confederate Parrott rifle barrel is sand cast bronze, 12 inches long with a 1/2 inch bore. The reinforcing band was made from a bronze bushing and shrunk on the barrel. The European metal standing garrison carriage was an experiment in casting a carriage in zinc, it came out well.

The barrel is a beauty. What project do the two brass trucks match up with?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Max,   You have set a new standard for things made from bronze that look great!  Boy, that combination of black garrison carriage and gleaming bronze really looks stunning.  Of course, the bronze would not be gleaming for too long sitting on the barbette level of a fort with just a caretaker or two.  Have you built a "Fighting Carriage" for this tube?

Also, please answer Boom J's question; we can't wait to find out as well.

Great job!

I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Thanks for the complements guys. The bronze trucks, along with a model 1841 barrel are scheduled to go on a copy of Double D's SAMCC gun. Tried to send another picture but somethings  not working.

That's a beautiful piece of work!

I don't see a vent. Will this be a shooter?

Thanks Terry C and Tropico, Both barrels are drilled full depth but I am not going to shoot them so I didn't put in vents. Besides, those tiny friction primers are a bear to make.

Thanks DD for fixing my picture.

Was sitting in the Doctors Office reading a 1989 copy of Yankee magazine.  They say to use Worcestershire sauce to clean brass and to coat it with Olive oil to protect it from tarnish.

Are you going to shoot it or eat it?
