H&R Ultra Hunter
« on: July 27, 2008, 06:34:58 PM »
Found one for sale with a asking price of $300. It has a Bushnell Banner 4-12 and the scope mount is too low. The thing is H&R to my knowledge never made one in 30-06 and the seller says it is factory. The gun is in about 99% condition with the only bluing missing is on the top of the hammer from scope contact. Any info other than the price is too high?

It is possable that the rifle was part of a special run made for one wholesaler or another , H&R has been known to do that from time to time . What is the barrel length on the rifle , 22" , 24" or 26" ?

As far as price , if it has one of the older Banner's , $300 is not that far off for a ( as new ) rifle when you figure that a new 06 plain jane Handi will go for around $240 to $270 depending on what part of the country your in and another $50 to $70 for the scope .

It has the 22" bull barrel. The Bushnell looked to be on of the newer ones and was clear but it had damage from the hammer contact on the power ring. I would probably replace the rings with Burris Signature rings and do a trigger job if I do buy it.

Thanks

As Stimpy said, it's likely a special order model, I doubt it's a bull barrel, H&R has never offered a bull 30-06, but many don't know the difference in contours since the standard contour is heavier than most sporter weigh barrels, if it measures around .650" at the muzzle, it's not a bull, they measure about .800". It could also be an accessory barrel fitted to an Ultra or an Ultra stock on a Handi.  Check to see if the last 3 digits of the serial number are engraved on the left side of the underlug, that will tell you if the barrel is factory fitted.

Will do next time I go to the shop. The barrel is may have been Std contour as I didn't pay much attention to it.  I am going to see if I can get the price down a little and then I will jump on the deal.
