45-70 Varmint
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:27:43 PM »
Went to a local gun shop yesterday and they had a 45-70 Varmint, thumb hole stock and heavy barrel.  Price was $369 so I just left it at the gun shop.  What do you consider varmints for a 45-70..........cape buffalo.......small pickups..........low flying Piper Cubs........

That's a good price, I paid $382 shipped for mine, it has the first all stainless frame, so It's gonna cost a bit more plus the Boyd's t-hole stocks aren't cheap.

Tony, where's the gun store, I'll go get it!  That's the beauty of the .45-70, you can shoot any varmint from a red squirrel to your Cape Buffalo.  I love to shoot 'chucks, etc. with the .45-70, cause If you can whack them at 200 yards plus, everything else larger is easy.  It keeps you in harmony with your rifle.  I do a Spring red squirrel/porcupine clean-out hunt every year on my place before the leaves come on with .50 cal. plus traditional muzzle loaders with iron sights, mostly to stay in tune with the guns.

The store is named Field and Stream in San Angelo, Tx.  I've purchased several guns from them over the counter.  I've also had them ship ammo to me for my old Iver Johnson pistols in 32 S&W and 38 S&W.  I don't have their phone number handy but you can look it up.  Great people to deal with.

Thanks Tony, now all I have to do is convince the wife she needs a .45-70.  Give her mine, and keep that one for myself.  Don't anybody tell!!!
