How do they do it ?
« on: July 14, 2008, 01:23:46 PM »
I was looking at Winchester 88's on the net and some had nice dark smoothe stocks. They had not been refinished but it sure looked like it. How do the dealers get them so smooth and nicely shined without a complete refinish job. Someone mentioned they just put a touch of motor oil on them and kept rubbing untill you get the desired finish. The ones I looked at doen"t even look graney.

I use a clean wash cloth and a spray wax like Boeshield or Sheath.  Works real good.  It can also be used on the metal making it bright and shinny as well.

I had tryed the motor oil years ago and it seemed to work well but I was informed that the petroleum/wood are not good for each other in the long run.

Pure linseed or tung oil would be a better option. My own useage is with the pure linseed oil but only six drops or so for an entire full stocked rifle. It is rubbed in by hand till it cannot be felt anymore then buffed out with a soft clean Cloth. This is a never ending process usually done after normal cleaning and will built up microscopic layers of high gloss finish. It takes around six months for the in depth finish to start to show. One advantage to this is that after the treatment has been done for a while, the inadvertant small scratch Can often be buffed out. The American Walnut stock on one of my older pieces will knock your eyes out.

A professional finish by a professional gun maker will meet or exceed this with just five coats of their brew. While there are many good products avalible and many good techniques ranging from using a tack cloth at the start to clean out the grain good before starting to using steel wool between the coats I think that some of the finishing brews are regarded as Trade Secrets and may be as hard to duplicate as the custom paints for bikes or cars.

My rifle came and I almost cried it looked so bad. I put that stuff on. The transformation is amazing ! I'm not going to refinish it, it's old like me and has earned it's spur's. I'm just going to clean it up and hunt with it.

Yup - "Show 'n tell's" much better than "tell 'n tell ".

After almost 50 years of playing with guns, it's refreshing (in this day of internet expertise) to see someone just try one's given, time-tested, advice - ILO dithering or picking the suggestion apart.

I hope you enjoy your "new-to-you" rifle !
