Stubbing
« on: July 20, 2008, 04:23:20 PM »
A donor shotgun barrel was provided to build up a prize for next years prairie dog shoot.Does the donor barrel /hinge lug have to be rifle/ shotgun/either ?  Given the basic NEF barrels made , what are the caliber limitations that can be fabricated? Are there certain ga,/cal pairings that work, some that aren't as worthwhile and others that won't work? Is it dollar-wise to build a caliber that is popular and rare enough to be a stub project? I am new to this discipline and was surprised to see the rise in prices for certain calibers as their numbers decreased. With the new regime and the uncertainty that goes with it,might stubbing become more popular. Also,is there another means to the same end ?   KODY

Check out the FAQs.
The sportsman lives his life vicariously. For he secretly yearns to have lived before, in a simpler time. A time when his love for the land, water, fish and wildlife would be more than just part of his life. It would be his state of mind

The donor can be either a rifle or shotgun. The shotgun is easier because it usually has a bigger hole (less boring).

Re: caliber limitations, something less that the belted mags, although I made a .50-90 Sharps that works just fine due to the reduced pressure and resulting breech thrust.

Due to the chamber wall thickness you can get with a stub barrel I try to stay with chamberings that a Contender is normally chambered in.  Any of the low pressure pistol rounds are a good choice and I have done one in 17 Remington FB, high pressure round but small case diameter.  Good luck, it is fun to do.  Larry
