I am ticked off this morning.  I just got done working with my stainless '06 last evening.  After working with 3 or 4 factory loads and finding out it liked 180 gr. Federals best,  I put my last shot last evening 1/4 inch from dead center 10X at a hundred.  This morning, I went down to let the horses out and there was a deer behind the barn.  I picked up the '06 to see if the deer was growing antlers, and I felt something loose.  The factory installed scope rail had shot loose.  I marked everything, took it apart, Loc-tited everything and put it back together.  First shot at 100 missed everything including the 3 x 4 ft. target back board!!  50 bucks worth of ammo down the drain and time to start over.  At least I know what the rifle likes, so it's back to the bore sighter.

I'm a mostly un-ticked now.  Got the '06 back on paper with my last two rounds.  More ammo is coming tomorrow, and we'll finish it off.  Thanks to Jim Hamilton who furnished all the parts, the 7mm-08 is finished.  Just shot 1/2 MOA in a 20 -25 mph WNW quartering wind.  It's the same wind we hunt in all the time.  That made me real happy!

Sorry to hear that Pete, but STUMPJMPR's advice is good, I do the same but using the info in the FAQs, just did the SS 45-70 as a matter of fact.

50 bucks of ammo? damn dude , here's a hint always bore sight and always start at 10 yards to hit paper then move out you'll save a lot of ammo there is no reason you can't zero in 10 shots if your shooting the load your rifle likes

That's what I normally do, but I was shooting four kinds of ammo to see what it liked best that's why I went through a bunch.

I can sight a rifle in with less than 6 shots without a boresight.

I had the same thing happen to me with a .44 magnum handi-rifle.  I had it all sighted in and noticed when I was cleaning it that the scope felt a bit loose.   After looking @ it, the base had shot loose and I got to take it all apart and loctite the base. 

I haven't made it back to the range yet to resight it in, but I too, definetly learned a lesson.  I wonder why they don't loctite the base @ the factory?  Wish they did.

Mr. petemi , try this when sighting your new scope, It will save you some ammo.
 1. use sand bags or gun vise to secure your rifle.
 2.put your cross hairs exactly on the target where you want it to shoot.
 3. shoot at the target. make sure that  you can find where the hits. ( use plenty of paper).
 4. put the cross hairs back at the same exact place as your first shot was aiming. make sure that your bags and rifle are stable.
 5. now adjust your scope (windage and higth) to where your 1rst. went .
 your rile and scope should be pretty well shooting where you want it . this saves me a lot of ammo. and should do the same for you.
this a trick that an old reloader shared with me and seems to work on every rifle that I have ever changed a scope on.

Hey pal, that's as prime a reason to take up reloading as any I've ever heard.

Like they've said already. Start up close to get an idea, then gradually increase the range a shot or two at a time.

Though it sounds like you figured it out now.

Since I now know it likes 180 Federals best, I got it back with just 4 shots yesterday morning.  Zeroed the .22-250 to 200 yards and the .357 to 100.  They're ready for coyotes opening Tuesday.

That happen to me with my encore 3006 it was the mount.

What I like to do to save ammo is zero at 10yards, however for most rifles shooting at or over 2600fps have it shoot 1" low at 10yards (assuming your LOS is 1.5" above the bore and you'll be VERY close to your zero at 100yards.  Assuming you do your part behind the rifle you should be able to zero with a 3 shot group at 100yards in 10 rounds or less.  Now that's the "I don't want to use a whole box of ammo" method.  The fewest rounds I've used to zero is 5.  And I had (at the time) a vise to hold the rifle steady in.  So I shot a round at 10, reset the rifle on my aiming point, and adjusted the sites to the impact.  Moved to 100 did the same thing (only needed a couple clicks if I remember correctly....been a whle) and fired 1 3 shot group.

Glad you figured it all out.  I know what you mean on the ammo, ran through 2 boxes of factory 308 Win, and barnes TSX 150's, for a Savage bolt gun, only to discover it really hates that bullet.
