.357mag./.357 max. barrel
« on: June 29, 2008, 09:20:07 AM »
Hello new to the forum . I'm about to send my SB2 in and have a .357 barrel fitted to it. Will I be able to use the same forend with my .44 mag. barrel? And it seems to me that I read somewear that some chambers are cut long and some .357 barrels can shoot 360 Dan Wesson does anyone no if this is true? If so is there any load data out there? Sooner or later I'm going to convert it to a .357 max. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has done this. Thanks in advace.

Check the FAQ's lots of info about 357 mag.  And yes 360 DW will chamber in a 357 barrel I use a hornady 180 gr and DW brass rather than rechamber.

Welcome!! Forend channels are the same for all barrels with the exception of 10ga/12ga slug forend, so there's no problem. 357mag chambers are huge, some almost big enough to chamber Max brass, I have to trim 360 Dan Wesson brass .010" shorter or it sticks, but mine is the exception rather than the rule. 360 DW Load data can be found at the links below. Lots of members have hand reamed the Mag barrels to Max, it's real easy to do if you're the DIY type. I chose to have my first one rechambered by a smith to 35 Remington, it's a shooter too with ballistics a bit better than the Max.

As Marv said, GBO sponsor 4D rents the reamer,  I recently rented a couple reamers from them and did my own 30-30AI and 460S&W, the rimmed chamberings are reeeal easy to do, Marv will give you all the info you need to "giterdun".  ;)

I'm looking to do this too, but how do you proof your chamber? 357 mag is about 35000 psi. 357 max is around 40000psi/48000cup. Theoretically, the 30-30, 30-06 and other barrels are all made from the same blank and can handle additional pressure. But again, it's not tested.

H&R centerfire rifle barrels are all made of 4140 alloy, if you want to proof it, tie it to a tire if you feel the need, my smith never has felt the need to proof any of the rechambers/rebores he's done for me since he only asks for the barrel to be sent to him, same for all the other members here he's done work for. ;)
