44 mag reloading questions
« on: July 27, 2003, 12:38:47 PM »
Went to the range today and tried h110 and imr4227. The 4227 seemed to burn dirty or it didn't burn completely. The h110 burned a lot cleaner. Is it normal for the 4227 to do this or do I need to try a diffrent primer. I am using winchester magnum pistol primers and 22. to 23.0 grains of powder.Does anyone have a good load for speer gold dot 240gr. hps and the 270gr soft points out of a 14" barrel.   This is my first try at reloading  for the 44.             thanks for any input

21.0gr of alliant 2400 and 240gr hornady xtps 1.60" oal,  shoot good in my redhawk. 1500fps average velocity. of course the 14" barrel should be faster. i don't see why most magnum primers wouldn't be fine. i use federal, and have used cci. the cci mag primers are harder cups and i have some misfires in the redhawk.
make sure you get a good crimp. the slow pistol powders need it for good ignition, so i've heard anyway. h110 should be a good powder, but havn't had the need to try it since the 2400 handles my needs just fine. :D

H-110 will do you good for full power loads but don't try and load it down. I have only used 4227 once and found out real quick that I don't like it. Too dirty.  KN
