30-06 NEF Range Report
« on: June 15, 2008, 09:58:35 AM »

I  just got back from N. Va. where I got some good range time in.  I shot 12 loads that I had made up along with some 180gr. R PSP factory ammo.   I have known for some time my gun likes a cold, clean barrel.  The first round I fired was a 165gr. Nos BT, H4350, that is a known performer in my rifle.  I shot with the forearm off & hit  1.190" from POA.  Still sighted in, still likes the load !  I let the barrel cool & fired a new load , 165gr. Accubond, Varget & hit .250" from POA. The next two were a little out but the Accubond/Varget load has great potential .
I also got good groups with 165gr. Hdy. SST's with IMR 4350, and 165gr. Accubonds with IMR 4350 but the POI on this load was about 8" below POA.  The big surprise was when the 180gr. R PSP factory loads grouped 2.5" on the same POI as the tried & true BT's.  For guys who work so hard on seating depth, the BT's were .168" off the lands & the 180gr. factories were .1965" off the lands.  Everything else I shot was .050" off the lands & showed promise but needs some work.  Shooting with the forearm off is a real "pain" so I  gave it up.  I bought a Choate "stoaway" forearm & am in the process of fitting it so it can be removed & installed easily with the thumb screw but hopefully it will shoot well with it installed.
Anyway, I had a good time & learned a lot. I expect the Accubonds will work well & I can't wait to try the "terminal ballistics" next fall.  Good shooting to everyone !  ;)

Sounds like you had fun shooting!! The standard forend screw can be replaced with a knurled thumb screw to facilitate changes as some have done, but the best choice is to just float or bed the forend so it shoots good with it on, all of which are covered in the FAQs.  ;)

Tim , I'm following your advice about fitting the forend so that it "just" stays on by its self by taking a little @ a time off with sandpaper. When I get that done on both of them I' ll complete the rest of the suggestions in the FAQ's.
Tomorrow I'm going to order the Choate "Varmiter" forend & see how I like it.  I know there will be times when I'll want to use a bipod anyway.
The "Survivor" forend seems like the hollow front end could vibrate a good bit when the gun fires.  Has anyone ever tried filling the voids to stiffen it up, & if so what did you use ?   ???

A few members have filled the hollow syn forends with RTV silicone.

"Ahoy" Saloon !  As an old "Squid" let me thank you for your service to your country & wish you & yours the best of good fortune in your new duty station!
I got my Survivor forend "after market" from Midway so it wasn't factory fitted,so now I'm taking a .001" off @ a time with sandpaper on it & the "tupperware" forend that came with my Handi to try & be sure neither is a problem. My Survivor forend has some movement from the thumb screw out to the front so I thought some " stiffening" could help.
Last night I ordered the "Varmiter" forend so I look foreward to fitting it when it arrives & "floating" all three according to the FAQ's. Keep ringing that 400yd. gong !  ;D
