Anyone fired a Savage 99A in .308 win??
« on: June 08, 2008, 03:13:21 AM »
Dear Guys,

Has anyone fired a Savage 99A in .308 win?  It has a straight stock, and a schnabel fore-arm, but I am not sure about the buttplate (crescent metal?)

I am a little worried that it may be butt-heavy, and that the recoil may be pretty bad, and that the muzzle jump may be excessive..

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also, being a late production gun, were there any big quality issues with the 99A?  (I've heard bad things about the 99C)

I also have a 99 in 308. The recoil is certainly manageable.
Don't worry about the quality of the late 99's. IMHO it is like the Win 70's... everybody will tell you the pre 64 rifles are better but fact is the new ones are good also... just a bit pale in comparison.

I've got a 99A in .308 and have shot it quite a bit, although not recently.  I never noticed anything unusual about it's recoil or reaction thereto.

Actually, I think the quality on the 99A is quite good.  Certainly better then the post '64 Winchesters as compared to the pre '64's.  I've also got a 99C and aside from the pressed checkering and that darn detatchable magazine, It's a fine rifle.

I don't have a 99A but I do have a 99F in .308 (circa 1955). It handle recoil very well
and is quite comfortable to fire from a bench. The quality is great, all 99s I have ever seen were very well crafted.
About the only negetive thing I ever saw concerning the manufacture was the use of detatchable mags
in some late guns. Whay Savage ever quit using the roary mag is beyond me.

+1

Just never, ever, lube it with WD-40 if you're gona hunt in cold weather, or the WD will freeze the loaded rotary mag, and you'll have a single-shot rifle until it thaws out.
