Found my .223 load
« on: May 23, 2008, 05:54:44 AM »
I'm finally happy with my .223 handloads.  I'm shooting a Handi with the standard barrel.  The load is 20.9grs of H4198 pushing a 55gr Sierra Boat tail Game King ignited by a Winchester primer.  I use once-fired brass, but match headstamps and trim to length after FL resizing.  I've shot on two different days with groups of .65 and .75 moa.  Usually I'll have a couple touching.

I think the accuracy comes from using only one disc in my Lee Loadmaster (1.57cc throws 20.9grs of H4198) as opposed to stacking the discs as I have with my other loads.

All that said, I'm thrilled with great accuracy from inexpensive loads ($.29/round) made off an inexpensive press fired from an inexpensive rifle.

give up on the 2 disks and get the Lee perfect powder measure.  Its under $20.00 at (insert mailorder place here)

I run H4198 through it all the time, works great.  Some talk about a little powder leaking out, Maybe it does but not that I have seen.
I have also run H4895 and trail boss through it.  I never took time to figure out how to read the adjustment, I just weigh several loads until it's what I want, then I start loading.

I have it working on the turret press in Auto charge mode, but I still have to return the lever every time.
When doing rifle shells, I don't use the Turret press in auto mode.  Problem is the handle hits on the primer feed if you have the press in Auto mode,  Instead I decap,  size, prime all the cases turning the turret by hand.  Then I weigh each case on my digital scale, charge it, weigh it again, then seat bullet.  I find once the Lee Perfect Powder measure is set, you never have to fool with the adjustments.

Sounds good, one of mine likes 21.5grs of imr 4198 and 50gr hornadys real well.
