Laser Cast / Tru-Shot bullets through a BC.
« on: May 23, 2008, 02:18:02 AM »
I am home on terminal leave and I starting to set up my reloading bench.  Low and behold I find two full boxes of bullets I had forgotten about.  One is a full box of 350 gr Laser Casts in .458 and the other is 423 gr Tru-Shot w/gc.  I remember shooting some of these with a Buddy from his 45-90, but I never got a chance to tinker with them for my rifle.

Do any of you folk use these, and what tips and warnings do you have for them.  If they are not to hard I would like to try hunting with them this year; reload recipes would be nice too.  I've got hundreds of these just sitting here, I cant wait to get at them! ;D

While I have not shot those exact bullets you speak of, I shoot only lead in my BC.  405 grain flat point, 405 grain hollow base, 500 grain flat point, etc.  I use "trap door" loads out of the reloading books.  Even the higher end trap door loads can let you know when you shoot them!
I have used Trailboss and Hodgdon H4895 and H4198. This list don't allow us to give out powder measurements.
he bottle of trail boss or H4895 don't go very far.  So I been using H4198 since it also works in my 32 Winchester Special.  The H4895 loads kick harder then the H4198. It gets uncomfortable to shoot 50 in a day.

I have "hits" on the steel turkey at 400 meters with lead.  There is no mistake when you hit the target, it rings loud and clear!
Now that I got my new glasses I can see the ram at 500 meters, he is my next challenge!  (this is with a tang sight)

With the lead bullets I keep the speed down to around 1400-1500fps.  With the gas check ones you can move them faster without leading, but I have no experience with Gas checks in 45-70.  I figure a lot of buffalo fell to straight lead at long ranges!

I'm shooting the 350's ahead of a leveraction starting load of 5744 in a Marlin CB 45-70.  Velocity is a bit over 1600 fps with no leading.  Recoil is noticible but not punishing.  Unique makes for some fun shooting at around 1300 fps with very little recoil.

Silver Surfer.  I have used the Oregon Trail TrueShot hard cast bullets in my BC.  They are marked 430gr., .459 dia, 24 BHN.  Don’t know if these are the same as yours, but if they are then I have two very accurate loads, but I have not hunted with the loads.

Powders are Hodgdon H4227 and Hodgdon H4198, velocity averages of 1703 and 1696.
