Bummer - Long lug shotgun barrel
« on: May 18, 2008, 11:40:53 AM »
I found a like new 20 ga shotgun barrel at a gun show yesterday. It does not come even close to locking up in my 38-55 frame.
I put a .375 pin in the barrel pivot pin cut and a .125 pin in the V notch formed by the locking surface. The .38-55 barrel is .012 shorter.
To fit the shotgun barrel means filing off a LOT of material while trying to maintain the angle and the correct profile across the lockup surface.

It was my intention to use the 20 ga as a barrel to be lined with a few old rifle barrels that would make good inserts.

Yeah I just check it in my BC 45-70 frame. The 20 ga barrel stops short of swinging into battery by about .040 gap at the top.
I checked the length of the 45-70 lug and it is the same length as the 20 ga lug so the plot thickens.
Using my pin set up they are both 2.937. That is using a .375 pin in the pivot pin cut out and a .125 pin in the locking notch.

Does any one know what point of contact is supposed to stop the closing rotation of the H&R barrels.
Is it

1. The standing breech face against the rear of the barrel
or
2. The bottom of the barrel against some point of the frame casting?

It appears the barrel may need some metal removed from the barrel rear face to fit one gun and some off the locking surface to fit the other.  So it may never fit both frames.

Barrels that don't come flush to the breech face and have a gap are usually lose when locked up. Some have a very slight gap at the top, but are against the standing breech at the bottom of the barrel or somewhere in between. Most factory barrels aren't true at the chamber face and need to be trued up as Larry has demonstrated.

Depending on how much headspace there is, I always flat file the barrel face so a sized round is flush with the barrel face first, then fit the barrel as needed. ;)

Just do like the factory does and grind the hinge pin deeper on the barrel.  I bolt the barrel lug to a flat plate and use a round pin wrapped in emery cloth in a drill press to slowly remove material at the pin half round on the barrel, this will keep it nice and parallel.  Larry
