Questions about the Wesson and Harrington ladder sight
« on: May 11, 2008, 07:58:31 PM »
I have some questions for owners of this sight that aren't answered in all of the reading I have done in the FAQ (yes I looked, please don't just link me to the FAQ).

This is the sight in question:

I read that the buckhorn is fixed. Roughly what range is it zeroed for with 45-70?

What is the mechanism for windage adjustment? Have you found it fine enough and stable enough?

How is the upright marked? Have you found it adequate and repeatable for longer distance shooting?

I thank y'all in advance for any answers!

Chris

So I gather that nobody owns this sight?

The Smith ladder sight has no windage adjustment, IIRC with the correct front sight (.404" 17A), the buckhorn is on at 100yds, but I couldn't tell ya, it won't work for me as it's too close to my old eyes to work in that mode and mine came with a notch slider which Smith finally replaced for me, but I haven't used it on my 45-120 BC since. Use the search for dodd3's posts on the  Smith sight, he's used it extensively for long range shooting, there are other posts on it too, seems to me Haywire Haywood also has done some shooting with it.

I suppose you drift the front sight for windage adjustment. That's really a pain, though.

yeah...  you gotta drift the front for windage.   once you get it set zero windage - you probably wont have to move it again.

the problem with big heavy slugs isn't really side wind influences - its gravity. lol

you can drift the lader sight in the dove tail in the block that is screwd to the barrel that pic is of the new model which has a locking screw in the sight dove tail which you loosen drift the site to where you want then lock it down.the way to go is use a windage front sight with the smith lader sight.

Bernie, how many times have you drifted your Smith sight? I would think the little 6-48 screws wouldn't take that very many times, if at all, depending on how tight the sight is in the base.  ??? I just tried my Wheeler sight pusher on mine and it works great, no hammer needed, it is tight tho, it won't move with just finger pressure, mine has the set screw on it. ;D
