Just burning powder
« on: May 11, 2008, 03:11:54 PM »
Wife had to work today, so I stole some hours all by myself at the free range.  Thats kinda hard to do with 7 kids, but the chance was here!  Took the new Ultra 25-06 that I put a Nikon Prostaff on, the 444, 45 Colt B.C. a dremel and 44 mag Rossi (92).  By the time I got out there it was blowing like crazy :o.  Got the Ultra on paper at 25 yds, then went back to 100.  Got the elevation where I want it, but the target looked more lika a pattern than any kind of group. :D  doesn't matter, burning powder. ;D  Next was the 45 BC.  Took the dremel, worked on the extractor till it lets me put them out with out binding, and burned more powder.  That metal buttplate sure looks purdy, but with hot loads, OUCH! :o  Hits harder than the 44 mag. on both ends.  Then the 44 lever, just for fun, busted more rocks, burned more powder.  Then the 444.  I had put a Tru-glo red dot sight on it before and had it sighted in, so just--- You guessed it, BURNED MORE POWDER! ;D :D ;D  All in all, A wonderful mother's day.  (I did take Moma out last night. ;)).  DP.

Stimpy                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Had a box of Remington 120's and most of a box of Winchester 120's.  A friend of mine had given them to me a year or so ago, and what more reason to get a 25-06? ;)  Looking thru Hodgons magazine/loading guide, looks like IMR 7828SSC might be a good one to try.  Also have picked up several Ramshot powders and will try their Magnum as well as H 4831.  I'm all ears if you are willing to share some advice.  Been loading awhile but never for the 25-06.  There's a bunch of tricks this old dog wants/needs to learn! ;D  Thanks for any help.  By the way, just got my Handi 30-30 in today, 25 days after ordering it!  Guess the pony express horses got tired crossing the prairie coming to Montana. ::)  DP.

2 loads that work very well in my 25/06 , both shoot 1" or less @ 100 .

1) 100 grain Speer BTSP , 28 grains of IMR-4227 , CCI 200 LR Primer

2) 75 grain Hornady V-max , 49 grains of H-380 , CCI 200 LR Primers

The 4227 loads do hit about 2" lower than the H380 but groups just as well out to 200 yards , then it starts to open up quite a bit . still working on a load for the 87 grain Sierra's .

Thanks Stimpy.  I'll give those a try.  Will probably stay above 100 gr. bullets with the 25-06.  Have 2 257 Roberts, 2 243's, 5 223's, a Hornet (Thanks Doug) and several 22's and couple of 22 mags to cover the smaller stuff. ;D  Kinda thinkin more along the lines of a long range Prarie Goat for this 26" barreled beauty.  Have to see how she does against the 257 Weatherby I still need to shoot.  This workin for a living sure gets in the way of a guy having fun! :P  DP.
